August 8, 2022
To Whom It May Concern:
The economic vitality of small communities such as Hugo and Scandia is enhanced by
promoting their uniqueness, often best seen through their history. For Scandia that has meant
highlighting our Swedish immigrant heritage and subsequent development as an agrarian hub.
To that effect we have in the city, among other things, a monument honoring the first Swedish
settlers to the state of Minnesota, a museum, Hay Lake School honoring Scandia’s embracing of
the education of its young people throughout its history, and the Gammelgarden Museum
showcasing the pride of Scandia’s Swedish heritage.
Our museums have both enriched our community for its residents and provided a draw for
visitors. Residents enjoy the history our museums provide for them. Scandia elementary
students have spent days using Hay Lake School as their classroom to experience what life was
like for children in earlier days, providing a type of learning that cannot come from a textbook.
Visitors brought to Scandia to see our museums help enhance the economic vitality of the City.
They support our businesses and allow them to grow.
Sincerely,
Christine Maefsky
Mayor, City of Scandia
Attachment 1
