<br />Washington County has just under 100,000 housing units, with a
<br />median value of $301,000—above the statewide median of
<br />$235,700. Homeowner vacancy rates are low at 0.6% or about
<br />486 total vacant homesteaded units. About 18.4% of occupied
<br />housing units in Washington County are renter-occupied,
<br />compared to 28.1% statewide.
<br />About 4.4% of the total population of Washington County live in
<br />poverty, with zip codes in the central region having higher poverty
<br />rates (see prior page). Nearly one in four children live in single
<br />parent families (23.0%), below the rate observed statewide
<br />(28.4%). There are also fewer disconnected youth in Washington
<br />County than observed statewide, at just 0.6% of youth (or about 78
<br />young people) between 16 and 19 years of age who are (1) not in
<br />school, (2) not high school graduates, and (3) either unemployed
<br />or not in the labor force. Nearly 18,000 residents (6.9% of the
<br />population) are foreign born, and 2.7% of residents over 5 years
<br />old speak English “less than very well.”
