Nguyen Project
Floristic Quality Assessment
August 2023

4
AREAM
Table 2. Comprehensive floristic quality data
Date 9/15/2023 Index Value
Community Type Fresh wet meadow S 19
Ecoregion Northcentral hardwoods Si 27
Growth Habit Count % introduced 29.6%
Forb/Herb 10 C 2.7
Graminoid 3 Ci 1.9
Shrub 1 FQI 11.5
Tree 12 FQIi 9.7
Vine 1 # of rare species 0

Individual C, Ci, FQI, FQIi, and corresponding weighted scores were also calculated for each Relevé.

Table 3. Complete FQI calculations for each Relevé
Index Relevé 1 Relevé 2 Relevé 3 Relevé 4
S 7 5 6 14
Si 12 9 12 20
% introduced 41.6% 44.4% 50.0% 30.0%
C 2.3 1.2 1.8 2.4
Ci 1.3 0.7 0.9 1.7
wC 2.8 2.2 0.9 2.9
wCi 0.5 0.5 0.5 1.8
FQI 6.1 4.9 4.9 9.0
FQIi 4.5 4.5 4.5 7.6
wFQI 7.4 7.1 7.1 10.9
wFQIi 1.7 1.5 1.7 8.0
# of rare species 0 0 0 0

Overall, the weighted FQI scores (without introduced species) were significantly higher than those of the
weighted FQIi, non-weighted FQI, and non-weighted FQIi scores. This is because Wetland 2 was mostly
dominated by large monocultures of non-native species including reed canary grass and narrow-leafed
cattail (Typha angustifolia). Within Relevé 4, where there was a higher species richness and diversity index
score (more equal cover of species), all index scores were substantially higher than those in the other
Relevés. Overall, the total comprehensive FQI scores and individual Relevé FQI scores are low, indicating
Wetland 2 is has a low-quality plant community and species assemblage.
