Hugo City Council Meeting Minutes for April 6,2015 <br /> Page 2 of 10 <br /> Interim Superintendent Tom Nelson was at the meeting to present the bond referendum. He <br /> reviewed the academic opportunities they were looking to achieve with this bond by allowing <br /> them to build a new elementary school and expand and improve the other schools. This would <br /> allow the ninth graders to move to the high school,the sixth graders to the middle schools and <br /> add preschool to the elementary schools. He explained that with the Districts current debt, <br /> taxpayers would see a reduction in the next few years. With approval of the bond,the District <br /> would hold outstanding debt at the same level and maintain the tax rate as today through the year <br /> 2028. <br /> Haas stated that he is the Council representative in the Stillwater School District and would be <br /> pleased to support the referendum. <br /> Arts Garden—Jill Whitney Birk <br /> Arts Garden works as a non-profit arts organization that offers arts experiences and community <br /> arts events for people of all ages. Art Garden has been using the City's community rooms for <br /> approximately the last four years and has put on several performances. <br /> Jill explained they were founded in 2012. Arts Garden is not currently not a full-fledged non- <br /> profit but is supported by Springboard for the arts,and everything is funneled through them. <br /> Arts Garden has put on seven productions and are working on their eighth. The performances <br /> are very well attended. Arts Garden focuses on intergenerational experiences at all skill levels <br /> and a variety in arts that fit into people's busy lifestyles. They are looking to raise funds and <br /> collaborate with Hugo on more projects. <br /> The Council talked about opportunities to collaborate with the City and the Lions Club,and <br /> stated their appreciation for providing the arts to the community. Jill informed Council she has <br /> a website, www.Artsgarden.org, if people want more information. <br /> Weidt made motion, Haas seconded, to direct staff to continue to work with them and support <br /> their growth in the community. <br /> All Ayes. Motion carried. <br /> Kidz n' Biz—Hugo Area Business Association Member Cindy Petty <br /> The Hugo Area Business Association will hold their annual Kidz n' Biz event on Saturday,April <br /> 25, 2015 at Oneka Elementary School. HBA member Cindy Petty talked about a few changes <br /> planned for this year and explained that it was an excellent opportunity for businesses to <br /> showcase their businesses. Residents have the opportunity to learn more about area business <br /> while children enjoy games,activities, food,and prizes. In the past,the City has donated$750 <br /> to the HBA to be used towards the Kidz n' Biz Event. <br /> Miron made motion, Klein seconded,to donate$750 to the HBA for the Kidz n' Biz Festival. <br /> All Ayes. Motion carried. <br />
