effective means . The air test shall be <br /> made by attaching an air compressor or test <br /> apparatus to a suitable opening and closing <br /> all other inlets and outlets to the sewer and/ <br /> or drain under test by means of proper <br /> testing plugs. Air shall be forced into the <br /> system until there is a uniform pressure of <br /> five (5) pounds per square inch in the <br /> section being tested. The system shall be <br /> considered satisfactorily air tested if the <br /> pressure therein remains constant for fifteen <br /> (15) minutes without the addition of air. <br /> (2) The portions of any buried sewer more than <br /> fifty (50) feet from a well or buried suction <br /> line shall be of adequate size and constructed <br /> of castiron, vitrified-clay, cement-asbestos , <br /> concrete or other pipe material acceptable <br /> in the State Building Code . Clay pipe and <br /> clay pipe fittings shall conform to A. S .T.M. <br /> specifications for standard strength or <br /> extra strength clay pipe and clay pipe <br /> fittings. No building drain or building <br /> sewer shall be less than four (4) inches in <br /> diameter. <br /> (3) The space between the bell and spigot of <br /> vitrified-clay pipe shall be packed with <br /> oakum, hemp or jute or otherwise prepared <br /> so as to form a concentric opening uniform <br /> in width around the pipe, which opening <br /> shall be filled with Portland cement mortar <br /> or other acceptable sewer-joint compound. <br /> Pour joints are recommended. Where cement <br /> joints are used they shall be carefully <br /> pointed on the outside and left smooth on <br /> the inside by drawing through them a swab <br /> or scraper. Construction of the line shall <br /> be such as to secure water-tight and root- <br /> tight joints, free of obstructions, and shall <br /> provide a grade of not less than 1/8 inch <br /> per foot. The ten (10) feet of sewer <br /> immediately preceding the septic tank shall <br /> not slope more than 1/4 inch per foot. No <br /> 90° ells shall be permitted, and where the <br /> direction of the sewer is changed in excess <br /> of 22 1/2° , accessible cleanouts shall be <br /> provided. <br /> -5- <br />
