9. Representatives from the district will be attending the aforementioned leaders' city council
meetings and educating the council members so that they may make a positional stance if they
so choose;
10. Hugo has invited the district to present on Monday, January 4, 2015, at 7:00p.m. at the next
Council meeting. More to follow the meeting.
Recommendation
Although a difficult and emotional issue, the recommendation to the Council is to refrain
from taking a formal position. Each individual is rightly entitled to his or her own opinion about
the situation; however, it is not within the jurisdiction of cities, councils, and others, to make
decisions regarding school -related issues. It is our duty to inform the public which requires us to
be as informed as possible.
We recommend that all continue to be up-to-date on the issues, the facts, and spread the
knowledge to the constituents and be able to answer their questions as thoroughly as possible. We
do not advise taking a formal stance on the issue so as to not alienate any institutions or individuals.
In addition, we recommend the Council strongly encourage the Stillwater Public School
District to do the following:
1. Be more deliberate in their attempts to initiate discussion with community members in a
meaningful manner;
2. Slow their process to ensure deliberate communication, research, analytics, and
consideration of alternatives from their own creation or suggestion of another;
3. Present alternative options instead of the closure of three elementary schools and their
advantages and disadvantages so the public may equally consider the options; and
4. Provide additional points of access to information regarding BOLD such as hand-outs,
presentations, staff, and additional community meetings.
5
