Taylor reported being approached by a resident in reference to the safety of the spring play <br />equipment in the City parks. Scott Anderson, Public Works Director discussed replacement <br />costs and replace options when repairs are necessary on existing equipment. Commission <br />members also discussed user bewares standards with appropriate expectations of use. <br />VII. Update on Hansen Property <br />Scott Anderson, Public Works Director mowed the 2 miles of multi use trails. <br />Syverson, Roger Clarke and Jyneen Thatcher, Natural Resource Specialist walked the Hansen <br />property to do an inventory of wetlands, plants, trees and assess the property for future <br />development. No major barriers to the development were identified and minor <br />recommendations for weed control were suggested for future planning of the development. <br />Trails were mowed at the property which total approximately two miles. It was noticed that the <br />new trails were rough to walk on in some points and were concerned about restricted use with <br />its current condition. Commission members discussed options of resurfacing, ground cover, <br />dozer and/or farm equipment tilling of the soil. Scott Anderson, Public Works Director will <br />research costs and options for further discussion at the next meeting. Taylor suggested <br />contacting Laurie McRostie for identifying restoration areas and determining noxious weeds for <br />future burns. <br />VIII. Discussion on Hanifl Fields Athletic Park <br />Scott Anderson, Public Works Director updated that the ground breaking ceremony is to be held <br />on July 19, 2010. The construction site will be contained until the building structure is up, for the <br />safety of park goers. The White Bear Soccer Club is also hosting the Minnesota Youth Soccer <br />Association East District Girls Championship at the fields on July 15 — 18tH <br />Shayla Syverson, Parks Planner applied for grant funding for items at the Hanifl Fields Athletic <br />Park through the recycling grant application to Washington County. A Recycled message board <br />was approved for matching funding with a maximum of $1,250. and signage to educate <br />environmental features. <br />Commission members discussed the message center costs and asked City Staff to research <br />similar boards for comparison on budget and design. Information will be presented at August <br />meeting. <br />IX. Update from the Park and Recreation Programming Sub -Committee <br />Shayla Syverson, Parks Planner informed that participation levels are increasing at the Lions <br />Den teen program. This week 12 kids were present for a slip -n -slide party to enjoy the sun and <br />fun. <br />Syverson presented information on a request from the Mahtomedi School District for financial <br />support in the amout of $6,065. They conducted a study of costs for Community Education/ <br />athletic facilities: <br />— 5.6% of participants in the Mahtomedi School District are from Hugo <br />-3- <br />Parks Commission <br />July 14, 2010 <br />
