HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016.03.02 Parks Minutes Minutes Parks, Recreation, anc Open Space Commission Meeting of March 2, 2016 Hugo City Hall, 7:00 pm Call to Order Present: Nicole Schmid, Dave Strub, Ranelle Tennyson,Tom Windisch Absent: John Pontrelli, Mat Rauschendorfer Staff Present: Scott Anderson, Public Works Director;Shayla Denaway, Parks Planner Windisch called the meeting to order at 7:08 pm. 1. Approval of Minutes from February Meeting Strub made a motion,Tennyson seconded to approve the minutes of the February 10, 2016 Parks Commission meeting as presented. All Ayes. Motion carried. 2. Summer Recreation Program Update Parks Planner, Shayla Denaway provided the Commission with an update on the summer recreation programs scheduled for 2016. This year the partnerships with the Washington County Library and White Bear Lake Area Schools will be expanded and programs offered will include:Action Hero Days, Kidz`N Biz, Story Stroll,Animals Make Music, Park Play Days,Tech Tac Toe,Safety Camp,and the Tour de Hugo. Denaway shared that Safety Camp will replace Nature Camp and that the TourdeHugo.com website is active. Input was sought from the Commission regarding changing the Park Play Days schedule to be that the activities would be held at a different park every Wednesday throughout the program. The Commissioners felt that with proper advertising this would be a great modification to utilize and showcase all of Hugo's parks. Page 1 of 2 Parks Commission Minutes March 2,2016 3. Lions Park Workshop Denaway informed the Commission that the City Council will be setting the date for the Lions Park discussion workshop at their March 7, 2016 meeting. Denaway provided the Commission with a brief review of the planning process for Lions Park and asked the Commissioners to provide direction on what they would like to discuss with the Council. The Commission agreed that important topics to discuss include phasing options, costs,and funding options. They also agreed that it is important to ask the Council what vision they are looking to achieve for the park. Denaway will share the scheduled date with the Commission at the April 13, 2016 Parks Commission meeting. -. {, »li"li; ! !nk "ei c<se.. A 2016 goal of the Parks Commission includes reviewing and updating the Parks,Trails, and Open Space Plan and identifying missing trail links. Denaway provided the Commission with maps that showed existing and proposed trails and highlighted the missing connections between them. Denaway shared with the Commission examples of how existing trails were constructed in Hugo and also provided insight into how and when planned trails may be constructed in the future. The Commissioners discussed the importance of adding missing connections and other missing trail segments to the Parks,Trails, and Open Space Plan so that they would be included in the City's Comprehensive Plan. 5.
