CITY COUNCIL & FIRE DEPARTMENT WORKSHOP
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 2011
7:00 P. M.
Mayor Miron called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.
PRESENT FROM COUNCIL: Council Members Chuck Haas, Phil Klein, Becky Petryk,
Tom Weidt and Mayor Fran Miron.
PRESENT FROM FIRE DEPARTMENT: Fire Chief Jim Compton, Assistant Chief/Fire
Marshall Marry Schwartz, Deputy Chief Kevin Colvard, Training Captain Jake Christian
ALSO PRESENT: Community Development Director and City Clerk Michele Lindau
Community Development Director Bryan Bear explained that over the past several
months, he has been meeting with members of the Fire Department. He presented a
PowerPoint highlighting the many issues the Department was facing and provided
recommendations.
Many issues revolved around making the department more family -friendly to avoid job
burnout. Everyone agreed the job needed to be manageable at all levels. There was
much discussion on staffing and scheduling to accomplish this.
The Council and Officers talked about the BLS service Hugo provids and the JPA with
White Bear Lake. It was the consensus that it was a very important service to provide
Hugo residents and should be continued and possibly expanded.
Also discussed was technology needs for the Department, policy on participation at
events, a Fire Marshall succession plan, and employee reviews.
