HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008.05.26 CC Minutes - Emergency Press Conference-Neighborhood MeetingMINUTES FOR THE EMERGENCY PRESS CONFERENCE, CITY OF HUGO, MONDAY, MAY 26, 2008, AT 7:00 P.M. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Miron. PRESENT: Council Members Puleo and Haas, Mayor Miron, City Administrator Ericson, David Snyder, Bryan Bear, Sheriff Hutton and emergency management personnel, and members of the public and media. 1.) A prayer by the Chaplain was offered 2.) Mayor Miron Reviewed the days' events a. Visits had been made by the Governor, Senator Klobuchar and other elected officials. Helicopter inspections were made. 3.) The Governor commented favorably about performance of citizens in dealing with the disaster. 4.) Mayor Miron thanked the press for being sensitive when dealing with residents 5.) Sheriff Hutton reported on casualties: a. 30 were treated b. 17 were transported c. 1 fatality d. The identity is not being released 6.) Mayor Miron thanked the sheriff and the school 7.) Ted Blaesing reviewed school transportation issues a. Classes to be held as scheduled b. Drop off is permitted 8.) The Red Cross Station will be relocated Tuesday a.m. from the school to the Fire Hall at 140th and Fenway a. Food will be provided b. Will provide stress debriefing services 9.) The status of lost and damaged homes was recounted by the Mayor a. All houses have been checked, there are 50 homes lost b. 75 homes with 50% loss c. 84 homes with 25% loss d. 61 homes with no damage e. Approximately 25 million in damage to personal property 10.) Community Development Director, Bryan Bear addressed the group a. Discussed presence of the building inspector and the demarcation of homes by sticker b. Red sticker means stay out c. Green sticker means it appears habitable from the outside d. Further inspectors will come tomorrow (Tuesday, May 27) e. Insurance adjusters will be permitted to inspect f. Contractors: i. Some restrictions have been put in place to require credentials of contractors ii. Homeowners should be mindful of indications of a bad contractor — demanding of cash payments and signatures, demanding of licensing g. Clean-up i. Six piles at the curb ii. Dumpsters delivered tomorrow iii. Reviewed day care options: New Life Church and Kindergartens iv. Pets: Pet Resort v. Mail: Mail is being held at the Post Office 11.) Mike Ericson provided an update a. Update: media room will go to City Hall 12.) Emergent Volunteers a. Volunteers will be received Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 8:00 a.m., Washington County Service Center in Forest Lake and transported to the scene b. Trained first responder volunteers will respond tomorrow, May 27, 2008 13.) Public Works Director, Chris Petree addressed the group a. He reviewed debris sorting requirements b. Dumpsters will be provided c. Additional volunteers will be put in as the week develops 14.) Home Depot has noted that the Home Depot building materials will be available at the Public Works facility 15.) Mayor Miron Noted that the: a. Green tagged houses with power are safe b. Red tagged houses are not safe c. As to green houses without power, it is recommended they stay out of those houses 16.) Sheriff Hutton reviewed security measures advising that residents stay in their homes 17.) Final Comments a. Chief Compton indicated that re-credentialing will occur tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. b. Chief Compton gave remarks thanking the residents and volunteers c. The Mayor gave final remarks commending the efforts of the citizens at working hard and persevering 18.) Motion to Adjourn, approved.
