HomeMy WebLinkAbout2016.05.11 Parks Minutes Minutes Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Commission Meeting of May 11, 2016 Hugo City Hall, 7:00 pm Call to Order Present: John Pontrelli, Mat Rauschendorfer, Nicole Schmid, Dave Strub, Ranelle Tennyson Absent: Tom Windisch Staff Present: Shayla Denaway, Parks Planner Strub called the meeting to order at 7:02 pm. 1. Approval of Minutes from April Meeting Pontrelli made a motion,Tennyson seconded to approve the minutes of the April 13, 2016 Parks Commission meeting as presented. All Ayes. Motion carried. 2. Lions Park Workshop Update Parks Planner,Shayla Denaway provided the Commission with follow-up from the April 28, 2016 Lions Park joint workshop held between the City Council and the Parks Commission.Topics discussed included the master plan,vision, infrastructure options, and financing options for Lions Park. Denaway informed the Commission that the City Council approved a feasibility study,to be conducted by WSB and Associates,for an estimated $17,000.00 at their May 2, 2016 City Council meeting. Staff has a meeting scheduled with WSB and Associates on May 17, 2016 to start working on the details of the feasibility study and will report back to the Parks Commission as specifics become available. Page 1 of 2 Parks Commission Minutes May 11,2016 �. 600(1 Ne bcrs i)ays Parks Planner,Shayla Denaway shared with the Commission that the 40th annual Good Neighbor Days will be held at Lions Park June 9 through June 12,2016. Press Publications has asked the City of Hugo to sponsor the Golden Spike Contest which is held the week of Good Neighbors Days. Prompted by clues supplied by Press Publications,the contest invites the public to look for a hidden golden spike in Hugo parks. A sponsorship of $250.00 has been requested by Press Publications. Denaway also informed the Commission that the City of Hugo has been invited to host a booth in Heritage Square as part of Good Neighbor Days. The booth could be available to promote the recreation programs and the reconstruction of Lions Park. Rauschendorfer made a motion, Pontrelli seconded to approve a $250.00 sponsorship to Press Publications for the Golden Spike Contest. All Ayes. Motion carried. . . )iii lI Hl Parks Planner, Shayla Denaway provided the Commission with an update on the summer recreation programs. A strong partnership with the Washington County Library System has helped to make more events available for Hugo residents. Story Stroll will be held at Lions Park during Good Neighbor Days;there will also be three separate Story Strolls offered at Heritage Ponds Park and one offered at Hanifl Fields Park. Denaway shared that Kidz N Biz had a great turn out with 400 in attendance. The Matter of Balance programs were both cancelled due to lack of interest. 5. Missing Link Exercise A 2016 goal of the Parks Commission includes reviewing and updating the Parks,Trails, and Open Space Plan and identifying missing trail links. At previous meetings the Commission has reviewed the Trails Plan and also reviewed maps of existing, planned, and proposed trails and highlighted the missing connections between them. At this meeting Parks Planner, Shayla Denaway updated the Commission on recent trail projects and discussed trail development priorities. Two miles of trails were added in 2015 and two more miles will be added in 2016. Recent trail projects include: Keystone Place trail connection, Park Dental trail connection, 147th Street roadway reconstruction project,Clearwater Cove sidewalk and trails, Fable Hill 4th Addition trails, Prairie Village sidewalks, and Waters Edge sidewalks. Denaway also spoke about the Hardwood Creek Regional Trail and the Regional Trail System. The Hardwood Creek Trail is set to undergo improvements including kiosks,way finding signs, and updated and cohesive signage. G.
