It was expected to occur
The MN Dep’t of Agriculture has designated Hugo as an infested area
Ash trees within the City will become
infested with EAB if they are not treated.
Untreated ash trees that get EAB die
Infestation spreads naturally at one mi/yr
Transportation of infested wood speeds it up

Ash Trees
Under 11% of trees in Hugo are Ash trees
Ash trees are characterized by opposite branching with bark in a tight diamond shape pattern.
Young trees have smooth bark
Infested trees may
have woodpecker holes and/or cracked bark
EAB larvae tunnel under the bark leaving “s”- shaped channels

What to do…
Contact a professional tree service
Contact Dep’t of Ag for ID assistance
City PW staff has been trained
Cut down your infested tree
Treat it
Treatment is chemical and must be applied
by a professional every year
Private trees must be handled privately
There is no funding from the state or fed

City Management Plan
Parks, public building grounds, open spaces
PW will remove infested trees when necessary.
Priority will be on those that pose a public hazard
City will decide on a case by case basis
if a tree should be treated.
City will offer a wood debris clean-up day in late Oct or early Nov at PW

Removal & transport
Infested trees should only be cut between Oct and April
To avoid spreading of beetles, which emerge in May
The wood can be burned on-site per city burning regulations
Washington County
is in a quarantine zone, meaning that wood cannot be transported outside of the county.
