HomeMy WebLinkAbout2006.11.08 Parks MinutesMinutes City of Hugo Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting November 8, 2006 7:00 p.m. Council Chambers — City Hall Meeting Chair: Roger Clarke Minutes By: Chris Petree Present: Parks Commission: Roger Clarke, Pete Pedersen, Dan Gabrielli and Rachel Berger. Planning Commission: Kelly Bailly Staff Chris Petree, Public Works Director. Absent: Charles Kirk and Jennifer May. Approve Minutes From October 18, 2006 Meeting Pedersen made a motion, Gabrielli seconded, to approve the minutes from the October 18, 2006 Parks Commission meeting. All Aye. Motion Carried. II. Oneka Elementary Gymnasium Programming (Andrea Wildman Hilal, WBL#624) Public Works Director Chris Petree provided the Parks Commission with a tentative schedule completed by the White Bear School District Recreation & Community Services Department for the Oneka Elementary Gymnasium which includes: Youth Recreational Basketball, Open Gym, Yoga, T'ai Chih and Adult Volleyball. The Parks Commission was pleased with the offerings being programmed and asked that staff follow-up with the school district and ask them to consider offering tennis and/or a racquet sport and Pilates. Furthermore, the Parks Commission appointed Parks Commissioner Rachel Berger to work with Public Works Director Chris Petree and school district officials to develop a "Tot Time" program in the gymnasium. Staff will follow- up with the Parks Commission on these items at the December meeting. III. Washington County Linear Park Plan Public Works Director Chris Petree met with Washington County Parks Planner, John Elholm, to discuss the County's Linear Park Plan. During the meeting Mr. Elholm stated that it was the County's intent to extend the Hardwood Creek Trail to 140th St. N. once the rail corridor was acquired and that the County would encourage the City to work with them for future trail construction and connections. IV. WB Baseball Association Public Works Director Chris Petree met with WB Baseball Association representative John Petersen and discussed opportunities for the Baseball association to partner with the City for use of outdoor fields and indoor practice space. The Parks Commission endorsed the idea that they Page 1 Hugo, Minnesota Parks and Recreation Open Space Commission Minutes November 8, 2006 Page 2 would be willing to work with the WB Baseball Association to help them secure fields during the summer months and allow them to use the Oneka Elementary Gymnasium during February and March for practices. Public Works Director Chris Petree will work with Mr. Petersen to program these items. V. Lions Park Improvements -Fencing Public Works Director Chris Petree informed the Parks Commission that the Lions Club recently constructed a permanent fence off of the Tennis Courts at Lions Park to help facilitate the events for Good Neighbor Days. City Staff approved construction of this fence and found it to be a minimal impact on the recreational use of the Park. VI. Skate Park Update Public Works Director Chris Petree provided the Parks Commission with a brief update of the skate park that is being considered at Podvin Park in White Bear Lake. The City of White Bear Lake is currently working with the School District for development of the skate park and will be deciding on the specifics of the skate park in the near future. Public Works Director Chris Petree will provide updates as this project moves forward. VII. Diamond Point Park Damage Public Works Director Chris Petree informed the Parks Commission that Diamond Point Park was vandalized on October 31, 2006 at approximately 9:30pm. The vandals set fire to a trash receptacle and two picnic tables and broke off three trees. The fire also caused considerable damage to the picnic shelter and the concrete plaza located beneath it. Public Works Director Chris Petree is working with the City's insurance company to repair the damaged items and the Washington County Sheriff's department is investigating the incident.
