Parks and Recreation Commission Meeting
February 10, 2010
7:00 P.M.
Call to Order
Jim Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.
Present: Kris Birch, Derek Larsen, Dave Strub, Mat Rauschendorfer, Jim Taylor, Noel
Schmidt, Tom Windisch
Absent: Roger Clarke, Rachel Berger
Staff Present: Scott Anderson, Public Works Director
Shayla Syverson, Economic Development/Parks Intern
Debi Close, Parks Secretary
I. Approval of Minutes of January 13, 2010
Strub made a motion, Larsen seconded to approve the minutes of the January 13, 2010
Parks Commission meeting.
All Ayes. Motion Carried.
II. Introduction of New Parks Commissioners
All Commission members welcomed Kris Birch, Mat Rauschendorfer and Tom Windisch.
Ill. Hugo Health Fair Presentation (Dr. Aaron Arvig)
Dr. Aaron Arvig, owner of Oneka Chiropractic and founder of the Hugo Health Fair gave
a background of the Fair. The Health Fair has been held annually for five years and is
made possible by partnership of several health-related businesses in Hugo. Dr. Arvig
discussed expanding the Health Fair to include an on-going community health initiative.
Dr. Arvig introduced Kathy Bystrom, who has assisted in organizing the Health Fair.
Kathy Bystrom informed the Commission of the Statewide Health Initiative Program
which granted funds to Washington County in the amount of $1.5363 million.
Washington County can use these funds, in partnership with local communities and
organizations, for the prevention of chronic diseases through promoting healthy school
cafeteria, smoking cessation programs and trail development, etc. Bystrom serves on
the Washington County Community Leadership Team that works with local communities
to utilize SHIP funding to promote healthier lifestyles and activities.
The next step is forming a Health Sub -Committee. Derek Larsen and Noel Schmidt
volunteered to serve on the Sub -Committee.
IV. Community Input Project — Final Report presentation (Erik Cedarleaf-Dahl)
Erik Cedarleaf-Dahl presented the Citizen Input Project results to the Commission
members. The presentation of the summary included detailed statistical results.
Commission members agreed to continue to discuss the results and make
recommendations to the City Council.
V. Discussion on Lions Park
Scott Anderson, Public Works Director, informed that residents in the Lions Park
neighborhood have been notified of a neighborhood meeting at the next meeting. This
meeting will gather necessary input to move forward on Phase I Lions Park
Redevelopment planning.
VI. Update on Sledding Party
Jim Taylor updated the Commission on the community Sledding Party that took place
February 6t", 2010. Approximately 100-150 residents participated and the event was a
big success.
VII. Update on Hanifl Fields Shelter Design (Scott Anderson)
Scott Anderson, Public Works Director, provided copies of the Hanifl Fields Athletic Park
Shelter Rendering site plans.
X. Adjournment
Derek Larsen made a motion, Windisch seconded to adjourn the meeting at 10:00pm.
