Parks Commission, City of Hugo
August 10, 2011

Call to Order
Present: Rachel Berger, Roger Clarke, Mat Rauschendorfer, Dave Strub, Jim Taylor
Absent: Kris Birch, Noel Schmidt, Tom Windisch
Staff Present: Scott Anderson, Public Works Director
Shayla Syverson, Parks Planner
Anna Wobse, Accounting Clerk
Jim Taylor started the meeting at 7:04 p.m.
I. Approval of Minutes from July Meeting
The minutes of the July 13, 2011 Parks Commission meeting were reviewed and no
changes required.
II. Discussion on Tour de Hugo
Parks Planner, Shayla Syverson presented on the family bike ride scheduled for
September 17. Major progress has been made in the past few weeks; online registration
will be launched soon and Penn Cycle has agreed to be a sponsor. There are three
different riding options with various activities taking place before and after the ride. The
routes were discussed and the safety concerns of the Commission were addressed.
III. Discussion on Scout Proiects
Public Works Director, Scott Anderson informed the Parks Commission that he was
contacted by a local Boy Scout seeking a project for an Eagle Scout Award and asked
the Commission to share any ideas they had. It was discussed that the project would be
funded by the city and the labor provided by the scout, unless he would be able to
secure donations to cover the cost of the project. Ideas discussed included, planting of

trees in the parks, taking a tree inventory of all trees on public property or planning and
implementing a Frisbee Golf Course at Beaver Ponds, Hanifl, Irish or Oneka.
IV. Irish Avenue Park Committee
Parks Planner, Shayla Syverson updated the Commission on the formation of the seven
member committee to plan Irish Avenue Park. As per the request of the City Council,
letters were sent to the residents adjacent to Irish Avenue Park notifying them of the
committee and asking for volunteers to serve as the neighborhood representative.
Currently there are six volunteers from the neighborhood that would like to be on the
committee. A meeting will be held with the volunteers to let them decide who should
serve as the representative.
V. Recreation Program Update
Parks Planner, Shayla Syverson updated the Commission on the Soccer Camp that was
held in July at the Hanifl Fields Athletic Park. 120 kids participated in the camp; the
coaching staff was excellent and the facilities at Hanifl worked out great. It was
discussed what could be done to make next years camp even better and also what
events could be held next.
VI. Update on Lions Parks Master Planning
Parks Planner, Shayla Syverson updated the Commission that the stakeholder
interviews are in the process. Berger and Taylor offered their assistance to help and get
these meetings setup.
VII. Recognition of Derek Larsen
Taylor presented Larsen with a certificate of appreciation and thanked him for his years
of service.
V. Adjournment
Taylor made a motion; Clarke seconded to adjourn the meeting at 7:55 pm.
