Parks Commission, City of Hugo
August 8, 2012

Call to Order
Present: Kris Birch, Joan Benner, Rachel Berger, Chris Boland, Roger Clarke, Mat
Rauschendorfer, Dave Strub, Jim Taylor, Tom Windisch
Staff Present: Scott Anderson, Public Works Director
Shayla Syverson, Parks Planner
Debi Close, Secretary
Jim Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m.
I. Approval of Minutes from June Meeting
Strub made a motion, Windisch seconded to approve the minutes of the June 13, 2012 Parks
Commission meeting.
II. Lions Park Master Planning Update
Parks Planner, Shayla Syverson gave an update on the stakeholder meeting held on
Wednesday July 11th, 2012 the Lions Park master plan. Prior to the Parks Commission
meeting, stakeholders gave feedback on three concept plans prepared and presented by
Amanda Prosser of WSB & Associates. The next steps in master planning Lions Park include
compiling the feedback and preparing a single preliminary master plan for review.
Parks Commission agreed to change the next commission meeting date to incorporate the
feedback from the August 8th, 2012 stakeholder meeting.
III. Presentation from Tori Gabrielson
Tori Gabrielson addressed the commission requesting a neighborhood park for the kids that live
north of the Hugo Fire Hall. Her presentation included giving more options for good choices to
the teens in her neighborhood.
Taylor discussed that the Hardwood Creek Tail will be extended South to 140th in 2014 which
will provide a safe way to access nearby parks. Taylor thanked Gabrielson for bringing this
issue to the Parks Commission. Commissioners agreed that this need will continue to be
remembered in future goal setting and planning efforts and residential development continues in
the area.
Parks commission members commended Tori for all the work put into the request and for
bringing this need to their attention.
IV. Recreation Program Updates
Parks Planner, Shayla Syverson updated with on all current and upcoming recreation events.
Park play dates running June 19th through July 26th. Parks hosting included Diamond Point,
Arbre, Beaver Ponds and Oak Shore. The activities had solid participation and trends were
recognized in attendance subject to weather, location and time. Next summer there will be
additional advertising including more flyers and Facebook to get the word out.
Skyhawk's Sports Camp was held August 13 — 16th 2012. Sixteen kids signed up and played
T -ball, basketball and soccer. The Flag Football Camp, geared towards older youth, was
cancelled due to small registration numbers.
Kidcreate Studio's Art Camps will be on August 21 — 27th, 2012. Camps include Cuddly Critters,
Angry Birds, App art for ipod/phones and a PJ Art Party.
Tour de Hugo will be on September 15th, 2012. Sponsors are excited for the event with $1200.
in donations received so far. The bike safety rodeo will be included this year and rides are
mapped out to be 5, 18 and 26 mile courses.
Movie Night in the Park September 14, 2012 at sunset showing How to Eat Fried Worms.
Games will start at 7:OOpm and snacks will be provided for the movie.
V. Adjournment
Windisch made a motion, Strub seconded to adjourn the meeting at 8:40 pm.
