Irl <br />Mr. Wikelius explained that the DOT felt the median should be closed <br />completely rather than placing signs indicating which turns are allowed <br />as suggested by Council. The reason given was that they felt the <br />signs would be confusing to the public and difficult to enforce. <br />Mr. Korf and Mr. and Mrs. Hermes agreed that, in their opinion, one <br />major cause of accidents is the right turn lane off Snelling into the <br />service road and Air.. Jim Korf, Falcon Barbers, and SNELLING & <br />Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Hermes, owners of the Hermes Shopping Center, were CRAWFORD <br />also in attendance as concerned business persons. DISCUSSED <br />~.' <br />Mr. Ekern informed that there are plans being developed for the up- <br />grading of Snelling Avenue, possibiliy as soon as 1983, and for that <br />reason the DOT could not justify changing turn lanes and signals at <br />this time. <br />(, <br />A lengthy discussion ensued regarding wording and placement of signs <br />after which Mr. Wikelius agreed to do further research on the problem <br />and also to determine at what time of day most of the accidents occur. <br />Ray Garcia, 1906 Prior, was in attendance_~requesting that the street <br />light at Larpenteur and Gortner be turned on. He explained that he jogs <br />in that area, has observed many students walking and biking, and fears <br />some one might be injured as it is very dark without street lighting. <br />Clerk Administrator Barnes reported that a letter has been received <br />from Keith Wharton, Assistant Dean of the College of Agriculture, U. of <br />Minnesota, also requesting the light be turned on. A discussion follow- <br />ed regarding the possibility of turning on the lights at Gortner and <br />Larpenteur, Tatum and Larpenteur and Lindig and Larpenteur. The matter <br />was deferrred until the Clerk Administrator can determine the cost of <br />converting the lights to high pressure sodium and the actual operating <br />costs. <br />REQUEST FOR <br />STREET LIGHTING <br />AT GORTNER & <br />LARPENTEUR <br />DEFERRED <br />Mayor Warkentien moved that the 1981 Policing Contract with the Ramsey <br />County Sheriff's Department be signed. Councilmember Brown seconded <br />the motion and upon a vote being taken the motion carried unanimously. <br />Fire Chief Jerry Renchin addressed Council requesting authorization <br />for Falcon Heights Ambulance back-up for Ramsey County. Council- <br />member Brown moved, seconded by Councilmember Larson that the request <br />be granted. Motion carried unanimously. <br />Chief Renchin also informed Council that vehicles are being parked <br />next to the Amoco Station making access impossible for emergency <br />t vehicles and requested afire lane be established in that area. Mr. <br />and Mrs. Norbert Hermes, owners of the shopping center, agreed to <br />provide and post the necessary signs. Councilmember Brown moved <br />the adoption of Resolution 80-31 authorizing the placement of Fire <br />Lane signs, 2 on the north and 3 on the west side of the Amoco <br />1981 POLICING <br />CONTRACT TO BE <br />S IGNID <br />F.H.
