sss <br />REGULAR MEETING, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 11, 1956 <br />Meeting called to order at 7:40 P.M., all council members being present as follows: <br />William R. Utecht, Mayor; George J. Shavor, Trustee; David P. Cartwright, Trustee; <br />.Harold C. Nilsen, Trustee; and Clyde J. Stewart, Clerk. Also present- Gilliam E. <br />Olsen, Treasurer, and Frank Pd. Graham, Attorney. <br />Minutes of March 28, 1956 were heard and approved as read. <br />Fire & Extended First year premium of $G76.85, due April 21t, 1956, on Fire <br />Coverage and Extended insurance policy No. 55C53~t305 (General Insurance <br />Company of America) was considered. Cart~rght moved that said <br />premium be paid. Seconded by Shavor and so ordered. <br />Firemen express Letters from Firemen Bertrand J. Slama and Stanley P. Schultz <br />thanks for were read, thanking the council for salary increases effective <br />salary increases March 1, 1956. <br />Engineers - Letter of April 9, 1956, from E.C. Bather and Associates <br />E.C. Bather and relative to their opening an office in Falcon Heights at <br />Associates 1673 Arona Avenue, and engineering services they offer. <br />Mr. Bather stated he is college trained and has just <br />finished 35 years service with the Minnesota State Highway <br />Department in highway planning, construction and da$ign. <br />Parks ~ Playgrounds- B. J. Rechtiene, Chairman, Parks and Playgrounds Committee, <br />initial dance, Falcon in a letter dated April 10, 1956, reported that the initial <br />Heights Canteen dance of the Falcon Heights Canteen (teen-alters) would be held <br /> in the Village Hall on Friday evening, April 13. Assurance <br /> was given that adequate supervision and chaperoning had been <br /> provided for. <br />Fireman Raymond L. Fire Chief Grumke's letter of March 30, 1956, was read <br />Merkel suspended. relative to suspension of Fireman Raymond L. Merkel for <br /> 15 days effective April 1, 1956, because of his arrest <br /> in Mounds View township for drunken driving and in view <br /> of repeated warnings he had received in this connection. <br /> The Chief reported that Firemen Stanley P. Schultz:: and <br /> Bertrand J. Slama will operate on a 21t hours-on and 2It hours- <br /> off basis until Merkel returns to the job or we get a new <br /> man. The Mayor reetd a mono regarding facts he had developed <br /> on the arrest of Merkel and probable sentence, also his <br /> proposal to the Fire Depar~hment for having a man on a standby <br /> basis, qualified to take over in emergencies so as to eliminate <br /> the need for working the regular paid firemen for prolonged <br /> extra-hour periods. He said that the Chief and two assistant <br /> Chiefs had discussed Merkel's case and agreed that Merkel <br /> should be suspended, but that an4Y further action should be taken <br /> by the council.
