-z-
. Door Hangers: Currently there is sufficient information out on
yard waste. Recent issues of the City's and Solid Waste Commission's
newsletters had information on dealing with yard waste. In addition,
Ramsey County has pub]_ished many pamphlets and flyers and distributed
them to the public on this topic. That i_n order to ho_l.d down costs
and prevent excessive repetition of this information, the Commission
would forgo the door hangers. The Commission, however, will re-examine
this type of public education process along with others in the future.
Button Battery Disposal: Terry Iverson told the Commission that
Mercury Refining Company in New YorJc will recycle mercury from any
kind of battery. They also se]_1 the boxes in which the batteries
are shipped. The Commission discussed the possibility of joining
with other communities to minimize costs.
Nancy Misra noted that the Commission could contact the office of
Waste Management and request a grant for button battery disposal.
She also noted that it is ]_egal for the purchaser of a button battery
to mail the batteries back to the manufacturer. An alternative
to the mercury button battery is the zinc air button battery. The
Commission will do further research and follow up on this issue.
Ad Hoc Committee to Address Multi-Housing Recycling: A Committee
was formed to address multi-housing recycling issues. Commission
members appointed to the Committee were John Hustad, Laura Kuettel,
• and Marty McCleery.
Arbor Day Activities: Shirley Chenoweth told the Commission that
Arbor Day will be in May. The City might need some volunteers to
help plant trees for the City in honor of the occasion. If people
were interested, they should contact her.
1990 Grant Agreement: Nancy Misra made a recommendation that the
City Council approve the grant after a general discussion on the
grant agreement by the. Commission. It was seconded by John Hustad.
The motion passed. unanimously. In approving the grant, however,
it was felt the City should change outdated language in the grant.
An example is the term "witnesseth" on page one (1) of the grant.
Commission Meeting Visitor Input: Cindy Diessner, a concerned citizen
of Falcon Heights, shared some of her views on solid waste issues
with the Commission. She felt public education was one of the most
important processes in solid waste issues. She also believed that
people should try to recycle a higher percentage of their garbage.
The Commission agreed with her views and was grateful she took the
time to share her concerns with them.
•
