Planning Commission
Meeting: 2/26/98
Item: 3
ITEM: Information on Traditional Neighborhood Planning
SUBMITTED BY: Susan Hoyt, City Administrator
EXPLANATION/DESCRIPTION:
The concept of traditional neighborhood planning is becoming increasingly
popular in planning and development circles. Originally used in Seaside,
Florida, an affluent resort community, it is now being tried on a larger scale
in more varied settings. The most recently notable example is the City of
Celebration developed by Disney.
The attached articles outline the concepts, which include small lots, front
porches, garages in the rear of lots or often off of alleys, boulevards,
identifiable public spaces and a "community feel". These neighborhoods
appeal to people looking for a sense of belonging to a neighborhood rather
than looking for the amenities of larger lots and outbuildings.
The information was collected at a seminar sponsored by Metro Council and
the Sensible Land Use Coalition. It was pleasant attending a seminar on this
topic and finding that the land use characteristics that you review and
discuss on the planning commission are not only recognized as intrinsically
valuable in existing neighborhoods, but desirable for future developments.
