MINUTES
PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
• October 15, 1991, 7 p.m.
Members Present: Carol Huso, Steve Schugel, Carol Weisberg, Dave Wickhem,
Lloyd Jacobson, Linda McLoon, Jyneen Thatcher, Carol Kriegler, Parks Director,
Sam Jacobs, Council Liaison
Members Absent: Jeff Johnson
1. Commission Member Changes
Due to changes in his employment commitments, Mike Farrell, resigned from
the commission. We all welcomed Carol Weisberg to the commission.
2. Lion's Club Tree Sales
The commission unanimously agreed to allow the tree sales to continue.
The trees will be out towards the front of the Community Park. The trees will not
be where ice rink flooding occurs.
3. Curtiss Field Dedication
The date was changed to October 26, since Scott Midness thought
everything would be done by then. Carol K indicated that it will be mostly
complete by then, including sodding. The play structure is almost done and
should be complete with pea rock in the next 2 days. The Kompan stuff is also
• here and ready to be installed.
The dedication schedule is as follows: 2-3pm, kids games and relays; 3-
3:15, formal dedication; 3:15 -3:30, the Duck Tales. In the event of terrible
weather, Carol K thought the Duck Tales would be willing to cancel without
charge. Carol K also looked into renting tents. The consensus of the commission
was that no one would come if it was pouring, and it might be best not to bother
with a tent. Carol K thought the dedication needed to go ahead as planned, no
matter what the weather. There will be an article in the Pioneer Press, North
section on Wednesday. She also sent press releases to the Focus, Review and
Bugle. We will serve cider and cookies. The two individuals who named the park
will be at the dedication (Miles Aiken and Shauna Janke). Carol K asked if the
commission members would come and help Chip and Carol K with the games.
3. Curtiss Field Building Update
The grinder that we all know and loved will not be a part of the building.
Instead amini-lift station will be installed, at the suggestion of the contractor. It
costs a bit more, 51500 will be absorbed by the contractor and 5750 by the city,
but there will be A LOT less maintenance. (What a forward thinking city council
we have!) There will be a pump and a holding tank that will retain all non-
biodegradable material (like hockey pucks).
The pea gravel will be 12" deep, instead of 8". It is recommended by
Landscape Structures and will give us a better safety net for changes in code in
the future. This was an additional cost of 5150. The basketball standard should
be in soon.
Kudos to Neil Weber (should we write him a letter) for keeping the
• contractors within budget etc. Carol K said he was great to work with.
Dave indicated that the hardcourt has quite a slant to it. Carol K said that
Scott indicated that they normally have a 1 % grade to prevent water pooling.
Everyone who has looked at it on the Commission agreed that it looked like a
greater slant than 1 %. Carol K will check into it.
