MEALS ON WHEELS
The meals on wheels service is available to all school district residents 60 years and over who
are unable to prepare their own meals. Those under 60 who are certified disabled are also
eligible for service. Referrals are received from hospitals, health professionals, nursing
homes, family members and, occasionally, older adults themselves. The meals are delivered
around the noon hour, Monday through Friday, by volunteers from 15 local churches. H. B.
Fuller, NSP, Slumberland, First America Bank Metro and Ramsey County Public Health have
joined our volunteer forces by providing a team of employees to deliver meals once a week.
There are currently over 550 active volunteer drivers altogether. Approximately 100 older
adults are receiving meals at any given time. Diabetic diets are available upon the request of
the client's physician. Meals are prepared and packaged at the Fairview Community Center. The
cost of the meal is $2.75 and all clients agree to a contribution amount at the onset of service.
Subsidy through the North Suburban Senior Council is available to those who are unable to
cover the full cost. Approximately 19,000 meals were delivered last year.
Funding for the meals on wheels service is provided through a purchase of service contract
with Ramsey County Human Services and Metropolitan Council, as well as through the North
Suburban Senior Council, Inc.
