V. PROCEDURES: <br /> 1. Precautions should be taken by all members to protect <br /> any open breaks in the skin of the hands including cuts <br /> and abrasions, with an appropriate bandage or <br /> protective covering. These preventative measures <br /> should be initiated prior to responding to calls. <br /> 2. If a garment(s) is penetrated with blood or other <br /> potentially infectious materials, the garment(s) shall <br /> be removed as soon as possible. <br /> 3. Gloves shall be worn when it can be reasonably <br /> anticipated that the member may have hand contact with <br /> blood, other potentially infectious materials, mucous <br /> membranes, non intact skin, and when handling or <br /> touching contaminated items or surfaces. Disposable <br /> single use gloves shall be replaced as soon as <br /> practical when contaminated torn, punctured, or when <br /> their ability to function as a barrier is compromised. <br /> Disposable gloves shall not be washed or decontaminated <br /> for re -use. Utility gloves are not required, however <br /> when used they should be worn over disposable gloves <br /> for added protection. Utility gloves may be <br /> decontaminated for re -use if the integrity of the glove <br /> is not compromised. However, they must be discarded if <br /> they are cracked, peeling, torn, punctured or exhibit <br /> other signs of deterioration. <br /> 4. Eye, nose and mouth protection shall be worn whenever <br /> splashes, spray, splatter, or droplets of blood or <br /> other infectious materials may be generated and eye, <br /> nose or mouth contamination is reasonably anticipated. <br /> 5. CPR pocket mask with one -way valve is required when <br /> performing mouth to mouth resuscitation. Mouth to <br /> mouth resuscitation should only be done in the absence <br /> of a bag valve mask or positive pressure device. <br /> 6. No smoking will be allowed in the Falcon Heights Fire <br /> department vehicles that are routinely involved in <br /> patient transport. <br /> 7. No eating or drinking will be allowed in Falcon Heights <br /> Fire department vehicles routinely used in patient <br /> transport until the vehicle has been adequately <br /> decontaminated. <br /> 8. In work areas where there is a reasonable likelihood of <br /> exposure to blood or OPIM members are not to eat, <br /> drink, apply cosmetics or lip balm, smoke, or handle <br /> contact lenses. Food and beverages are not allowed to <br /> be kept in refrigerators, freezers, shelves, cabinets, <br /> counter tops or bench tops where blood or OPIM are <br /> kept. <br /> 6 <br />
