One area focused on waste reduction and pollution
prevention. Nancy Misra suggested the following: recycling is at a high
participation /volume rate; recycling is actually the last step; let the goal
focus on what to do before recycling; if it is too easy to recycle it may
simply breed more waste. Terry Iverson made reference to Jerry Reuttemann
starting up the neighborhood watch programs and the high participation rate.
Is it possible to educate the residents through cable skits, workshops,
pre- recorded tapes from the Waste Education Clearinghouse (part of the Office
of Waste Management) and public education on preventing waste?
Misra believes the newsletter has been very successful and may have reached a
saturation point regarding recycling education. It may be the time to discuss
pre- cycling. Iverson feels more personal contact is needed for education. It
was suggested the commission take advantage of ice cream socials, park and rec
programs and safety camps to teach children. Other suggestions to involve
children included: poster contests, donated pizza prizes, skit contests and
Fair displays. Also, take the three goals John Hustad* provided and set up
additional objectives to reach the goal of waste reduction. It may take
x- number of years to decrease waste totals; both recycled and land filled.
Life -style changes are the goal.
It was also suggested by Misra that the name of the commission be changed to
something more along the lines of Environmental Commission. This may be
discussed for possible action at the next meeting.
Increase collection at residential, commercial and multi- housing
units, Increase community awareness of all aspects of recycling,
Increase education of blockworkers, residents, business and schools
about recycling; using recycled products and hazardous waste disposal
