e
CONSULTING ENGINEERS
Maier Stewart Associates Inc.
MEMO TO: Residents in Northome Area
FROM: Maier Stewart Associates
Terry Maurer Bill Westerberg
SUBJECT: Informational Meeting Summary
Proposed Northome Area Alley Improvements
DATE: June 1, 1993
FILE: 330 031 -10
We would like to thank those who attended the informational meeting on Tuesday, June 1, 1993,
for their questions and comments. Following is a list of the questions and comments and a
review of the key points from the meeting.
The key points of the project are as follows:
1. It is proposed to reconstruct the alleys in the Northome area except for the alleys between
Albert and Hamline Avenue and between Larpenteur and California Avenue.
Existing alley widths vary between 11 and 19 feet, with a right -of -way width that varies
between 18 and 20 feet. The existing bituminous pavement was originally constructed
in 1955 according to information provided by the City Clerk, Ms. Shirley Chenoweth,
and Mr. Vince Wright, the Maintenance Director. Two options were given for the alley
reconstruction typical sections.
Design Option 1: The alley would be reconstructed with an inverted crown
approximately 16 feet wide with 3.5 inches of bituminous pavement and 10.5 inches of
Class 5 aggregate base. In this option, drainage would be down the center of the alley
and storm sewer added where available.
Design Option 2: This option uses the same pavement section as design option 1 except
that it incorporates a 3 -foot wide concrete valley gutter down the center of the alley. The
width of the alley would increase to 19 feet because the minimum width a bituminous
paver can make is 8 feet on either side of the concrete valley gutter. Negative to this
design is that a waiver of trespass will be required on a few blocks for 19 -foot
construction within an 18 -foot right -of -way.
1959 SLOAN PLACE, SUITE 200, ST.
