MINUTES
Solid Waste Commission Meeting
May 13, 1993
Marty McCleery called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m.
COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: John Brynildson, Michael Haglund, Terry
Iverson, Laura Kuettel (first half), Marty McCleery, Susan Smith,
Shirley Chenoweth, staff representative, and Sam Jacobs, council
liaison.
COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT (BUT ACCOUNTED FOR): John Hustad, Nancy
Misra, Lyle Wray, and Brian Standing, staff intern.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Michael Haglund moved and Terry Iverson
seconded the approval of the minutes of the April 8, 1992, meeting.
CHANGED MEETING DATE: The Commission discussed the change of its
meeting date from the first Thursday to the second Thursday of each
month. Members agreed that, despite some initial confusion, the new
meeting date was appropriate.
RAMSEY COUNTY SURVEY: Shirley Chenoweth reported that Ramsey County
included 52 Falcon Heights businesses in its commercial recycling
survey and that it made follow -up visits to 36 businesses for
further discussion of their recycling efforts and needs. Of those
businesses, 25 to 30 are pursuing recycling efforts. Some already
had programs in place, while others are working with the County to
establish programs. Some Northome tenants are combining their
recycling efforts despite the absence of a facility -wide program.
In addition, it was noted that some businesses are engaged in reuse
and reduction efforts as well as recycling. Laura Kuettel suggested
that information about the County's involvement be included in the
City newsletter. The Commission discussed concentrating its efforts
on reduction and residential recycling to avoid duplication of the
County's focus on commercial recycling.
MEGAMALL TOUR: Laura Kuettel moved and Michael Haglund seconded
that the Commission invite the City Council along for a tour of the
BFI waste processing facility at the Mall of America. The tour is
scheduled for July 8, 1993, to take the place of the July Commission
meeting.
CHANGE OF COMMISSION NAME: The Solid Waste Commission is
considering changing its name to reflect the present and future
expansion of the scope of its functions. Laura Kuettel surveyed
several cities with entities analogous to the FHSWC and found that
"Solid Waste" is commonly used in their titles. "Environmental" is
also widely used, as in New Brighton's Environmental Quality
Commission. Commissioners are to bring name suggestions to the June
meeting, where the matter will be subject to a vote. Members must
be present to be eligible to vote.
