MINUTES
Solid Waste Commission Meeting C.
August 12, 1993
Chair Marty McCleery called the meeting to order at 7:12 p.m.
411 COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESS: John Brynildson, Michael Haglund,
John Hustad, Terry Iverson, Marty McCleery, and Susan Smith.
COMMISSXON MEMBERS ABSENT: Laura Kuettel, Nancy Misra, Lyle Wray,
Shirley Chenoweth, staff representative, and Sam Jacobs, council
liaison.
OTHERS PRESENT: Jill Poeschl, Administrative Assistant, City of
Lauderdale.
JULY CONMISSION MEETING; Terry Iverson, Laura Kuettel, Marty
McCleery, and council liaison Sara Jacobs were the only Commission
members present for the July meeting, which took place at the waste
treatment facility at the Mall of America. No written agenda or
minutes were generated. If enough interest is shown, a second visit
may be scheduled for those who were unable to attend. As part of
the July meeting, the members present briefly discussed the Solid
Waste Reduction Week open house and the potential liability of
cities for cleanup of landfills located on city property or to which
city waste has been transported. No formal action was taken
regarding either issue at the July meeting.
SOLID WASTE REDUCTION WEEK: An open house and educational program
has been scheduled for 6 :30 to 8:30 p.m. on September 30, 1993, to
coincide with Solid waste Reduction Week, which is September 27
through October 2, 1993. The event will be co- sponsored by the
cities of Falcon Heights and Lauderdale, and Jill Poeschl,
administrative assistant for the city of Lauderdale, attended the
meeting to plan the event. Displays, presentations, handout
materials, and "freebies" will be solicited from E -Z Recycling,
Supercycle (Lauderdale's recycling provider), all licensed waste
haulers in both cities, Ramsey County, the Minnesota Pollution
Control Agency, and the Office of Waste Management. Commercial
users of recyclable materials will be approached for information or
demonstrations. Some children's games will be developed, and if the
budget allows, refreshments will be available. There was some
discussion of holding the event in a more central location, such as
in a tent at Larpenteur Snelling or the Gibbs Farm parking lot,
but it was determined to be too late to make such arrangements for
this year's event. If weather does not allow outdoor activities and
additional space is needed, Terry Iverson will seek authorisation to
use the firehouse. Terry will also prepare a master list and
coordinate /delegate planning duties. Plans will be finalized at the
September commission meeting. Jeff Pains, mayor of Lauderdale, will
attend the September meeting.
