JAN 11 '94 11 :05AM PETEFSEN TEWS SQUI P.3r4
SOLID WASTE PERIODICALS: Laura Kuettel reported that the City
receives a number of periodicals relating to solid waste issues.
Commission members may be asked to rotate reading and reporting on
these materials.
1994 CESSION GOALS: Marty McCleery suggested that each
Commissioner select one of the Commission's goals for 1994 and take
charge of efforts to achieve the goal:
a. McCleary chose to be responsible for Goal No. 2, Reduction
of Hazardous Waste. There was some discussion of the costs
and risks of curbside pickup of household hazardous waste.
Proper disposal may be more likely if it is easier, but the
cost may be excessive. Ramsey County already provides
disposal facilities, although residents must transport the
materials to the site. The Lions or another service
organization could be enlisted to pick up and transport
hazardous waste to the disposal facility- Liability is an
issue regardless who does the pickup. On the other hand,
improper disposal due to lack of education or the
difficulty of proper disposal is risky and costly as well.
b. Laura Kuettel chose to be responsible for Goal No. 3, Waste
Management Public Education (and possibly Goal No. 1,
Reduction of Volume of Waste).
c- Susan Smith chose to be responsible for Goal No. 4, City
Solid Waste Administration.
CITYWIDE GARAGE SALE: The sale is tentatively scheduled for
May 21, 1494. The Commission discussed pickup of unsold items at
curbside after the sale. Laura Kuettel will obtain general
information from groups such as the Disabled American Veterans,
Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Salvation Army, as well as Goodwill.
regarding their interest in doing such a pickup and what, if
anything, they would charge. Susan Smith will inquire about the
success of the community garage sales in Lauderdale and St. Anthony
Park. The Commission will see if the Parks and Recreation
Commission would be interested in conducting an event on the same
day as the sale. There was also some discussion of ways to
publicize the sale and to direct visitors around the City, including
placement of balloons and/or signs at major intersections.
FLUORESCENT BULBS: As of August 1, 1994, residents can no longer
discard fluorescent bulbs with their garbage. (The bulbs are
hazardous waste because of their mercury content.) Ramsey County
has made no provisions for proper disposal of bulbs. USA Lights in
Roseville will accept small quantities (fewer than ten) from
noncommercial users, but businesses have no ready solution for
disposal of used bulbs.
BATTERY RECYCLING: In Terry Iverson's absence, discussion of
battery recycling was deferred.
-2-
