CONSENT C S.EN> Eiiii! >�O ':O. ;:..ON.'; >C NTR CON ::.:N Meeting Date: 4/27/94 Agenda Item: C 7 CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION ITEM DESCRIPTION: Community Park Prairie Planting Project SUBMITTED BY: Carol Kriegler, Parks Rec Director REVIEWED BY: EXPLANATION /SUMMARY: Late last fall the disturbed areas surrounding the new ponding area at the Community Park were seeded and planted with native grasses, prairie and wetland seedlings. The site preparation and seeding was conducted by a subcontracted landscape firm of Ramsey County as a part of the Cleveland Avenue road construction project and the seedling planting was accomplished by volunteers through an Eagle Scout project. The remaining "natural" areas are scheduled for restoration this spring. A proposal has been received from "Prairie Restoration, Inc." for services related to site preparation, seeding, planting, and first year maintenance. It is suggested that the proposal be accepted with the exception of the entire wildflower seedling planting element. Much of this portion of the project can be accomplished more economically through another community volunteer planting project, or by the utilization of part -time temporary staff. Altogether eliminating the seedlings would reduce the proposal cost from $9,422.25 to $5,047.25. It is suggested that a minimal amount of seedlings be planted in the areas in and around the park entrance sign in the Northwest corner of the park. This area is considered a significant focal point and main entry to the park and would benefit significantly by the expedient planting of seedlings. $5,500.00 was budgeted for this project in the '94 CIP. ATTACHMENT: Prairie Restoration Proposal ACTION REQUESTED: Authorization to contract with "Prairie Restorations, Inc." for services related to prairie restoration at the Community Park in the amount of approximately $6,000.
