April 14, 1994 <br /> Suggested materials and procedures to be used to establish prairie grasses <br /> and wildflowers at the new Falcon Heights Community Park <br /> (Estimated project size: 3.5 acres) <br /> A. Site Preparation: <br /> 1. Implement a controlled burn in all areas with existing dormant vegetation, using <br /> appropriate procedures, equipment and permits. (To be done as soon as possible <br /> in April.) <br /> 2. Following the burn or mowing, allow regrowth to occur, followed by application <br /> of Roundup® herbicide as per manufacturers directions. Allow a minimum of 7 <br /> days before disturbing the vegetation with other procedures. <br /> 3. Disk or rototill the soil to a depth of 4 <br /> 4. Harrow or rake the soil to create a firm, smooth seed bed. <br /> B. Seed and Seeding: <br /> 1. Seeding dates shall be in the spring or summer before July 30th. <br /> 2. All grass seed shall be applied with a Truax® seed drill. <br /> 3. All wildflower seed shall be applied by broadcasting. <br /> 4. A harrowing or raking shall follow all seeding. <br /> 5. The seed mix shall consist of one of the following: <br /> Grasses lbs. /acre <br /> Short dry mix: <br /> Includes 33% Side oats grama, 25% Blue grama, <br /> 40% Little bluestem and 2% June grass. 10 lbs. <br /> OR <br /> Mixed height mesic mix: <br /> Includes 35% Big bluestem, 9% Side oats grama <br /> 2.5% Canada wild rye, 2.5% Switch grass <br /> 25% Little bluestem, 25% Indian grass and <br /> 1% Kalm's brome 10 lbs. <br /> 1 <br />
