The purpose of the open house
is to acquaint the community with many aspects of the city's
rescue service and to educate the community about first aid
safety. Medical emergencies provide the greatest demand for the
city's public safety emergency services with 182 medical calls in
1993. Joe has been actively involved in the annual fall fire
department open house which typically stresses fire prevention.
There are several program ideas being proposed for this day. It
may be possible for the city to combine a focus on rescue
services with a stress on bike safety. Carol Kriegler, the
city's park and recreation director, and Joe are considering
combining a bike rodeo safety event with the EMS event in order
to effectively involve the rescue workers with bike safety
education.
The proposed open house is planned for the day after the citywide
garage sale on May 21. However, staff feels there would be
little conflict between the events since they are very different
in nature.
Finally, staff is requesting that the council authorize $275 for
the purchase of 500 static stickers with key medical emergency
information to put by a telephone (attachment A). This money is
not budgeted for such information, but it could come from
underspending in another category or from the contingency fund
without jeopardizing the city's budget. The Fire Relief
Association plans to match the city's funds with its funds to
kick off this event.
ATTACHMENT A:
A Program ideas and sticker design
ACTION REQUESTED:
Discuss and approve the EMS open house and 275 for
expenditures.
