was not successful. However, a seventh grade student at the middle school, Catherine Mackiewicz
expressed interest and completed an application form for the position as student representative.
Barbara Leary also shared the recycling work begin done by students at Falcon Heights
Elementary. She asked Commission members to reconsider their January 13 discussion of the age
of the student representative as well as requiring that the representative be a Falcon Heights
Elementary graduate. Curriculum work being done by Ramsey County Solid Waste
representatives was also discussed; Cathi Lyman-Onkka would like to present the K -12 materials
to the Commission at some future meeting. The presentation would include an overview of the
materials as well as working through an exercise -time: 45 minutes. Also, the Future Problem
Solving competitions for the 93 -94 school year include solid waste management problem solving.
The Commission members agreed that Catherine Mackiewicz should be given the opportunity to be
the student representative since she had shown enthusiasm and interest in the position. Marty
McCleery directed Barbara Leary to send Catherine's application to Susan Hoyt for the council's
consideration.
Recycling Contract Update: John Hustad reviewed the EZ Recycling contract approved by
the city Council this past month. Some of the highlights of the contract were: elimination of the
fifth Friday collection (a savings of $1200 will be realized); negotiators were not successful in
adding plastic bags or cereal boxes to the list of recyclables; the contract will be for 3 years with
performance measures included. EZ is working on possibly adding junk mail, aerosol cans, and
textiles in the future. The Commission's recommendation for spot market price reporting by EZ
was not discussed by the Council.
Superfund Notes: Marty McCleery shared a copy of a recent Environment Reporter which
discussed Superfund information relating to municipalities and their subsequent liability relating to
hazardous waste.
The meeting adjourned at 8:45 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
„2
Barbara B. Leary, Substitute Scretary
Solid Waste Commission Minutes February 8, 1994
2
