HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION <br /> Minutes from March 8th 1994 <br /> Commissioners Present; John Treadwell, Gwen Willems, Dave Bowers <br /> Commissioners Absent; Ed Sheppard, Ted Johnson <br /> Guests; Sue Gehrz <br /> The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM. <br /> Business: <br /> 1. The minutes from the February 8th meeting were approved unchanged. <br /> 2. John and Gwen attended the Minnesota League meeting that we hosted at City Hall on <br /> February 26th. The League of Minnesota Human Rights Commissions decided to not <br /> expend any funds for participation in the International Human Rights conference in New <br /> Brunswick. However, Gwen is investigating possibilities of writing about the conference <br /> for a human rights publication and of preparing materials from the conference to be made <br /> available to the public through the University's Human Rights Center. Gwen wished to <br /> thank the City Council for their unanimous voted support of her partipication in the <br /> conference. <br /> 3. There will be Community Garage Sale May 21st. May 13th is the deadline for groups <br /> and to be placed on the maps that will be distributed. The sale is hosted by the Solid Waste <br /> Commission and part of the Moines will go to the Park and Rec. <br /> 4. Gwen had contacted the local papers for the placement of posters on discrimination and <br /> bias. They had not yet return her calls. <br /> 5. John Treadwell offered to met with Susan Hoyt regarding the list of businesses in <br /> Falcon Heights that is needed so that we may offer help in regards to the A.D.A. <br /> 6. John also had the posters on bias and discrimination put up in the lobby at City Hall. <br /> Thanks! <br /> 7. There is a seminar and workshop on "mobilizing the community to counter and prevent <br /> hate crimes" at Maplewood City Council chambers on March 16th 4:00 to 6:00 PM at 1830 <br /> East County Road B.any and all are welcomed to attend. <br /> 8. Dave will check with Susan Hoyt about applicants for the Human Rights Commission. <br /> 9. There was discussion on youth recruitment for the Commission and ways in which to <br /> proceed, such as an incentive program through the school and or community. Thought <br /> was given to setting up Human Rights Commissions in the schools themselves. John <br /> Treadwell will contact the schools. <br /> 10. The Minnesota League of Human Rights Commissions will serve as a clearinghouse <br /> for information from the Presidents Council on the A.D.A. which will make it easier for the <br /> public to ask and receive answers to their questions. <br />
