JAN 26 '94 19 :44AM PETERSEN TEWS SQUI <br /> P.2/7 <br /> MIN[TrES <br /> Solid Waste Commission Meeting <br /> January 13, 1994 <br /> Chair Marty McCleery called the meeting to order at 7 :05 p.m. <br /> COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: Jeffrey Alexander, John Brynildson, <br /> Michael Haglund, Laura Kuettel, Barbara Leary, Marty McCleery, Susan <br /> Smith, Shirley Chenoweth, staff representative, and John Hustad, <br /> council liaison. <br /> COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT: None. <br /> APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF DECEMBER 9, 1993: Susan Smith moved and <br /> Jeffrey Alexander seconded the approval'of the minutes of the <br /> December 9, 1993, meeting. <br /> ADDITION TO AGENDA: Laura Kuettel added to the agenda her report <br /> regarding an organized collection of unsold items after the proposed <br /> city -wide garage sale. <br /> WELCO ME OF NEW MEMBERS: The Solid Waste Commission welcomed two <br /> new members, Jeffrey Alexander and Barbara Leary, and also welcomed <br /> former member John Hustad as the new liaison between the Commission <br /> and the City Council. Introductions were exchanged. <br /> RECRUITMENT OF NEW <br /> MEMBERS: The Solid Waste Commission is still <br /> two members short of full capacity. Discussion continued regarding <br /> approaching "target" categories to fill the vacancies. <br /> a. Multi -unit Housina Resident. Residents of multi -unit <br /> housing are likely to have different concerns than <br /> single family residents. It was noted that Commonwealth <br /> Terrace has a separate recycling program and its residents <br /> would offer a unique perspective to the Commission's <br /> recycling activities. Multi -unit residents are also likely <br /> to be more transient. Departing commissioners are <br /> presently required to remain on the Commission until a <br /> replacement is appointed. Multi -unit residents could be <br /> approached through a specific invitation in the Focus, and <br /> possibly through a flyer or sign posted in common areas of <br /> multi -unit buildings. <br /> b. Business Owner. While business owners may not live in <br /> Falcon Heights, they have a direct interest in the City's <br /> environmental concerns. If a nonresident business owner <br /> had difficulty in attending evening meetings, he or she <br /> could participate indirectly by receiving Commission <br /> materials and submitting comments and ideas by mail or <br /> telephone. <br /> c. Student. Schools could be approached to identify a <br /> suitable student to serve on the Commission, either in a <br /> voting or a non voting capacity. It was noted that some <br /> students who live in Falcon Heights do not go to school in <br /> the area, so an inquiry to the public high school would not <br />
