Meeting Date: 9/14/94
Agenda Item: P 5
CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Request for authorization to proceed with expenditures for site
improvements in front of city hall
SUBMITTED BY: Pete Klinkenberg, Public Works and Parks Superintendant
Carol Kriegler, Park and Recreation Director
REVIEWED BY: Susan Hoyt, City Administrator
Linda Treeful, City Forester
Betsy Fitzsimmons, Hoisington Group, landscape architect
EXPLANATION /SUMMARY: (prepared by Susan Hoyt)
The property in front of city hall requires upgrading to be in keeping with the maintenance
standards in the community. This will require establishlishing lawn in the bare, sandy area. It
also requires some tree pruning and removal of some low branches, diseased and deteriorating
trees. The staff met with Betsy Fitzsimmons, who is a landscape architect working on the
Larpenteur Avenue project, for her advice on what vegetation should stay and what go. She
suggested removing most of the low shrubs and the bending trees and branches, but felt that with
some serious pruning some of the larger, healthy trees can stay. She said that the modest
landscape improvements would not be a long term waste of money because good soil and
trimmed trees would be part of any landscape changes in the area.
Staff estimates that the tree removal, topsoil and seed will cost approximately $1,200.
ACTION REQUESTED:
Approve 1,200 out of the TIF capital construction fund for site improvements in front of city
hall.
