MINUTES
Falcon Heights Solid Waste Commission
June 2, 1994
Chair Marty McCleery called the meeting to order at 7:07 p.m.
COMMISSION MEMBERS PRESENT: Jeff Alexander, Michael Haglund, Laura Kuettel,
Barbara Leary, Marty McCleery, Mary Pat McGinnis, Susan Smith, John Hustad (council
liaison), and Carla Asleson (staff representative).
COMMISSION MEMBERS ABSENT: John Brynildson and Catherine Mackiewicz.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the meeting of May 12, 1994, were approved
on motion of Laura Kuettel, seconded by Jeff Alexander.
CITYWIDE GARAGE SALE: Commission members and city staff received many favorable
comments and very few negative comments regarding the first city -wide garage sale held on
May 21, 1994. One resident submitted written comments. The consensus was that the sale
was a great success the weather was favorable, participation by residents and shoppers was
mull, and the event met its goal of "recycling" unwanted but usable items while also fostering
camaraderie and a sense of community. The Commission viewed the videotape of the event
(produced by John Hustad) and discussed the possibility of using the tape to publicize the
next city -wide sale. Specific observations and suggestions included the following:
The balloons did not last very long in the heat and wind_ Stronger balloons, possibly with
less air, might work better. Streets with fewer participating residents would have
benefitted from better marking. Residents could be enlisted to put up more balloons
themselves.
The "No Parking" signs on some streets caused confusion. The city could approve
covering the signs on the day of the sale.
Some shoppers and residents asked that future sales be two days rather than one, but the
negatives appear to outweigh the positives in this regard. Among other things, most
residents are not likely to participate for both days, and nonparticipating residents may be
bothered by two days of heavy traffic.
Some areas of the city were better organized than others. Block captains could be enlisted
next year to help coordinate sales.
Business participation was mixed. Some business owners wanted to distribute maps but
didn't know how to get them, while others claimed not to have known about the event at
#S
sue s ■s
