all. Earlier contact with business owners and more coordination of their activities would
result in better commercial participation. The business districts could be divided into
areas and one business could be designated as the map distribution point for each area, or
businesses could be invited to let the Commission know if they want maps to distribute.
Some people thought the maps were too detailed; others thought they were not detailed
enough. More reference points could be included to help visitors find their way around.
The map distribution points could have been better publicized. Some residents did not
know about the maps or wanted to have a few for distribution. More maps could be made
available to participating residents through block captains, or residents could be invited to
pick up maps at City Hall.
Preshoppers were evident the day before and early on the morning of the sale, and some
residents started their sales before the official hour. There was some discussion of
proposing an ordinance to regulate sales on the citywide sale date, but the Commission
and the City are not in a position to police these activities. The official date and hours
can be announced, but residents may choose not to comply.
The date chosen for the sale seemed to be a good one, falling after the fishing opener and
Mother's Day but before Memorial Day. The primary conflicts were weddings and
graduations. The corresponding date for next year is May 20, 1995.
Combined sales were reported to have worked well in certain neighborhoods, especially on
alleys. This suggestion can be included in guidelines to residents before the next sale.
Concerns about security and unwanted traffic were raised before the sale, but no
complaints were received afterward.
Some residents apparently thought a pickup had been arranged for leftover items. The list
of dropoff sites was distributed to participating residents, and the confusion was not
significant.
As followup, the Commission will conduct an informal survey of some residents and
businesses to get feedback and suggestions for next year. Barbara Leary, Jeff Alexander, and
Mary Pat McGinnis will develop a list of questions which the Commission will finalize at the
July meeting.
PROJECT CHILDSAFE: Further details of the car seat collection were discussed. Project
Childsafe will train the Lions volunteers to take in used car seats just before the Ice Cream
Social. Laura Kuettel will coordinate. To avoid any confusion about what is meant by "car
seats", press releases prior to the collection will indicate that infant, toddler, and boosters seats
will be accepted. Mary Pat McGinnis will draft press releases. The seats which are collected
will be placed in the City's truck. Pictures of the collection will be taken with the City's
camera. Carla Asleson will determine how the collection can be handled if it rains on the day
