Meeting Date: 12/7/94
Agenda Item: C -4
CITY OF FALCON HEIGHTS
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
ITEM DESCRIPTION: Authorization for staff to apply for the Unitree Funded
1994 Neighborhood Tree Planting Grant established by
Foster Wheeler Twin Cities, Inc. and the University of
Minnesota
SUBMITTED BY: Linda Treeful, City Forester
REVIEWED BY: Susan Hoyt, City Administrator
EXPLANATION /SUMMARY:
Foster Wheeler Twin Cities, Inc., the contractor operating and renovating steam plants
at the University of Minnesota, is contributing $50,000 per year for each of the next
25 years for tree planting in neighborhoods adjacent to the University of Minnesota
and on campus. The Tree Trust was awarded a $30,000 contract to manage the first
year of the planting program. The following neighborhoods are eligible for these funds
for Spring, 1995 tree planting:
Marcy Holmes, SE Como, Cedar- Riverside, Prospect Park -East River Road, St.
Anthony Park, Como Park (west of Hamline Avenue), Falcon Heights, and Lauderdale
The primary purpose of this program's tree planting is for energy conservation through
urban reforestation and for absorption of carbon dioxide vehicle emissions by trees
and shrubs.
The city staff would like to submit a grant application for funds to assist in the city's
tree planting program. The proposal would involve volunteers doing the planting and
a $10 cash match per tree. The city's share would be covered by the amount
budgeted in the expanded tree planting program for 1995. Opportunities for eligible
tree planting exist in the courtyard and on the boulevard along the parking lot at
Falcon Heights Elementary School and on the boulevards of north -south streets where
shade trees would reduce summer cooling costs by shading east and west windows.
The proposal would be for approximately $6,000, to plant approximately 50 trees.
ACTION REQUESTED: Authorize application for the Unitree Funded 1994
Neighborhood Tree Planting Grant
X11" t`
