GARBAGE HAULING IN NORTHOME NEIGHBORHOOD
YOUR OPTIONS
City staff are occasionally asked why the city doesn't limit the number of
garbage haulers that operate in the city. Minnesota state laws allow cities to
arrange "organized collection" only under very strict legal conditions. The city
council must publicly declare their intent to restrict garbage hauling businesses
in their city and provide compelling reasons for doing so. A few years ago, the
Falcon Heights City Council investigated the option of organized collection.
Upon review and the testimony of haulers and residents alike, the council opted
NOT to restrict garbage hauling in the City of Falcon Heights.
Despite the state law that forbids the city from favoring any one hauler over
another, neighbors are free to band together as a small group and choose one
or more haulers to service their neighborhood as a whole. This type of
voluntary, cooperative arrangement is already in place in a number of Northome
neighborhoods as residents jointly arrange for alley snowplowing service. The
University -Grove neighborhood of Falcon Heights currently is serviced by one
garbage hauler an arrangement that was coordinated by the residents of that
neighborhood, not by the city.
If you are interested in limiting the number of garbage haulers in your
neighborhood, you might consider speaking with your neighbors about a
voluntary coordination of service among those on your street. The city, under
current laws, cannot in any way assist neighborhoods in this effort. We can,
however, provide neighborhoods groups with free meeting space and provide
the names and addresses of neighbors on your block (this is public information).
Residential garbage haulers currently licensed to operate in Falcon Heights
include:
Bellaire Sanitation, 429 -6766
BFI /Woodlake, 784 -2104
Easy Cart, 224 -8519
Knutson Services, 423 -2294
Walter's Rubbish, 780 -8464
Waste Management of Blaine, 784 -8349
Rate comparisons are not provided here since 1) hauling rates change quite
frequently, as it is a very competitive business; and 2) individuals and small
groups may be able to negotiate a better rate than standard quoted rates.
