MINUTES
CITY COUNCIL
JUNE 8, 2005
Parker reported that the success and popularity of the County's yard waste
and composting sites. She also noted that in the past year the County has
begun to accept brush in addition to other yard wastes.
With regard to human services, Parker reported that of the approximately
5,000 new refugees that the County anticipated would locate in St. Paul,
2,316 are in the County's public assistance program. These refugees are
doing well and are finding jobs. Parker reported that 12 child care centers
were closed in the County because of cuts in funding for child care
expenses for working parents. Parker indicated that this is a difficult issue
since parents must find jobs, but then have difficulty in affording child
care expenses. Parker also reported on the pending legislation which may
reduce the number of people eligible for medical assistance.
The County has been working on a consolidated 911 Dispatch System in
light of homeland security issues. Parker felt that a consolidated system
was in the best interests of the County, but agreed the cost allocation as
proposed was not equitable. Parker suggested that this discussion is not
completely closed. Blesener indicated that no one disagrees that a
consolidated system is the way to go. The concern is with the cost
allocation and board representation. Blesener pointed out the City of St.
Paul is being subsidized by other jurisdictions. He also noted that St. Paul
hods the majority of representation on the 911 board.
Parker thanked the Council for their time this evening and their
involvement in County-wide issues.
VOUCHERS Mr. LaValle introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION NO. 2005-6-I24 -APPROVING THE VOUCHERS
The foregoing resolution was duly seconded by Montour.
Ayes (5) LaValle, Montour, Blesener, Keis, Allan.
Nays (0).
