MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
January 15, 2004
The Director stated that since that time, the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District has
approached the City Council regarding use of the same site for a new 3,500 square foot building
to house their offices. The Watershed District is interested in building a very environmentally
friendly structure. This item is just a concept right now, but the Watershed District wanted to
seek the City's input prior to pursuing this item further with their Board. Sanders commented
that it would be nice to see some public space within the building where nature classes could be
held.
Larson was concerned about the appearance of the gazebo and what use it would serve. Broten
felt that a gazebo on Noel Drive would not be very visible. Sackett Glaser felt that the Round
Lake area off of Little Canada Road would be a more suitable location for a gazebo due to its
visibility. The Commission agreed. Sackett Glaser commented that she does like the idea of the
gazebo, but was not in favor of putting it on Noel Drive.
Larson recommended that although the Commission liked tlae idea of a gazebo, they preferred
to see placement of the gazebo in the Round Lake area or on another, more visible site.
Motion seconded by Gray.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
ELECTION Larson recommended nominating Sackett Glaser as chair of the Parks & Recreation
F OFFICERS Commission in 2004.
Motion seconded by Gray.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
Larson recommended nominating Broten as vice-chair of the Parks & Recreation
Commission in 2004.
Motioic seconded by Gray.
Motion carried 6 - 0.
SPOONER Sanders presented drawings for a new sign at Spooner Park. The sign would be made of wood
SIGN with routed letters similar to other parks signs within Little Canada. The sign would not be
centered at the entrance to the parking lot due to the flagpole present in the area. Instead, it
would be placed to the left of the lot facing Eli Road and would be 15 feet back from the road.
Landscaping, wood fencing, and stone columns would be incorporated as well. A separate
board for a Canadian Days message could be added to hang off the bottom of the sign similar to
the sign at Pioneer Park that directs users to additional parking on Desoto Street. The sign
would be six feet wide. Sanders said that there would be minimal maintenance needed along the
fence since shrubs would be planted around this area. The Director commented that Canadian
Days may have some access issues pertaining to the sign concept.
