MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
February 5, 2004
Sanders presented revised signage plans to the Commission for their review. He stated that
Canadian Days has expressed some concern about the prior placement of the stone column on
the west side of the park entrance due to the ability to maneuver around it. Therefore, the sign
has been moved to accommodate their concern. The sign will be placed in the center island of
the parking lot entrance where the flagpole is currently located. The flagpole will be relocated
to the back of the sign. Concrete pavers featuring the City logo will be added with the
possibility of placing flowers in the center. This wooden sign will be placed between two stone
columns.
Sanders presented four different scenarios of how the park name could be presented along with
wording recognizing Canadian Days. The majority of the Commission favored "Concept E"
where the sign would be widened from 6" to T6" between the columns to accommodate the
length of the name, the park name is listed as "Carl Spooner Park," and a seperate board could
be added below the main sign to incorporate the wording "Site of Canadian Days Celebration."
Deb Sinna, vice-president of Canadian Days, indicated that the Canadian Days Committee feels
that Canadian Days wording on the sign would be nice because it would create more visibility
and recognition for the festival. She stated that the celebration has been held in Spooner Park
for 25 years and the Canadian Days Committee does not foresee changing the location.
Gray commented that he was not in favor of Canadian Days recognition on the sign. He stated
that although Canadian Days has made a big contribution to the city, he felt that it would set a
precedent for other organizations wanting to be recognized on park signs. Larson was in favor
of the Canadian Days message on the sign because it gives a "small town" feel to the
community. Crary was okay with adding the Canadian Days message, but felt that less wording
is better such as "Site of Canadian Days." Sackett Glaser agreed that less wording is better, but
she was in favor of recognizing Canadian Days due to their contributions.
Broten expressed concern about the wood portion of the sign and its ability to be replaced in
future years when it deteriorates. Sanders said that brackets could be installed to hold the wood
portion to make its replacement easier.
Larson recommended that "Concept E" be chosen for the park sign at Spooner Park witle the
wording to remain as shown on the plan.
Motion seconded by Steinert.
Motion carried 6-1 (Cray voted against).
Larson preferred that the whole logo be constructed with pavers. He felt that the logo would be
lost in the flowers. The flowers could be planted elsewhere.
Sanders commented that the flagpole will be lit and the electrical boxes could be hidden behind
the columns.
