MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
November 4, 2004
delayed until next year. Steinert felt that the projects should be done at the same time in order
to save money. Due to time, it would be impossible to complete all four fields this fall.
SIGNS Sanders stated that bids have been received for the signs at Spooner Park and the Firefighters
Memorial Trail. He asked for the Commission's direction on pursuing construction of the signs.
Cost of the sign for Spooner Park is $26,206 (includes the sign panel, two stone columns, and
pavers with the city logo). Cost of the sign for the Firefighters Memorial Trail is $13,300
(includes the sign panel and two brick columns).
The Director stated that money has been budgeted for the project. The City has talked about
approaching the fire department for additional funding. Gray asked if Canadian Days was
willing to contribute money for the Spooner Park sign. The Director said that they did express
interest earlier, but have not been approached recently about the idea.
Steinert recommended approval of the low bid for the Spooner Park and Firefighters
Memorial Trail signs in the arnouiat of $26,206 and $13,300 respectively.
Motion seconded by Gray.
Motion carried 4 - 0.
"iRECTOR'S The Director reported on the following items:
. PORT
• The Director handed out the proposed youth activity fees for 2005. He stated that the LCRA
has already agreed to buy down the cost of activities by 20%. He indicated that the fees are
proposed and may need changing, but are pretty accurate. He stated that he is reshucturing
the park shelter fees and will present them to the Commission at a later date.
• The Friends of the Parks & Trails will be holding their annual tree sale again. He distributed
a list of the trees available for purchase. In the past, individuals have donated trees to City
Parks via this program.
• Broten, Sackett Glaser, and Steinert's terms are up in December. The Director encouraged
them to re-apply by sending him a note that he can present to the City Council at their
meeting on December 15. Broten expressed hesitation to commit to a three-year team due to
the fact that he may be selling his home in the near future. The Director stated that Broten is
a valuable member of the Commission and he urged him to apply even if he may not be able
to fulfill the full term. He stated that Commissioners are hard to find and Gretchen Crary
resigned from the Commission today so there is already an opening needed to be filled.
Crary resigned due to other time commitments that conflicted with the Commission
meetings. Broten asked if he could fulfill the balance of Crary's term. The Director felt that
would be possible. Broten commented that he will not be able to attend next month's
meeting due to a planned vacation.
• On October 19, we received an e-mail from a passerby stating that she saw a bald eagle in
our area when she was driving west on Highway 36 near Interstate 35E. She was excited
about the sighting and wanted to let someone know.
