MINUTES
PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
October 1, 2015
30 LITTLE The Director reported that the City has submitted an offer to purchase 30 Little
CANADA Canada Road, one of the few remaining properties to be acquired along Round
ROAD Lake. If that purchase is finalized soon, the hope would be to demolish that
house along with the house at 56 Little Canada Road East and a couple of others
that the City recently acquired all at one time.
SENIOR It was noted that the land has been cleared for the senior housing project in the
HOUSING vicinity of Rice Street and Country Drive. Miller asked if the path that the
PROJECT Commission requested was dedicated. The Director indicated that the path is
addressed in the Development Agreement for this project.
NOEL Fahey asked the status of the Noel Drive sidewalk connection from Little
DRIVE Canada Road to Gervais Mill Park. The Director thought that the City
SIDEWALK Engineer was going to bring additional information back to the Commission.
He stated that at a recent meeting of the Commission the Engineer indicated that
the sidewalk was going to go up the hill rather than be constructed at street level.
The Director noted that the Commission's position was that the sidewalk should
be at street level. He indicated that he was not sure of the status of plans or the
construction timeline. The Director indicated that he would obtain a report from
the City Engineer for the next Commission meeting.
RONDEAU Sanders noted that some landscaping work is being done in Rondeau Park
PARK to provide some separation from the property to the north. The Director
LANDSCAPING also reported that the Watershed is redoing the holding pond closest to Jackson
Street in Rondeau Park using native plantings which were obtained through the
Corrections Department.
PIONEER Miller asked the status of the ponding project in Pioneer Park. The Director
PARK indicated that the pond will be installed as part of the Centerville Road
improvement which will occur next year. With regard to the ponds near the
ballfields, there will likely be some trees and shrubs added to that area next
spring.
RECREATION Vang asked how the City communicates the availability of recreation fee
SCHOLARSHIPS scholarships in light of the recent donation by the Behles family. The Director
indicated that an article has been included in the upcoming City newsletter. He
also reported that this information is communicated to the schools.
FALL SPORTS Miller asked the status of fall sports. The Director reported that a soccer clinic
was recently held, and there numbers were up for that clinic. However, there
would not enough participants to form a soccer league, either this year or last
year. Those that registered were absorbed into the Maplewood program at the
same cost as the Little Canada registration fee. Horwath stated that it will be
helpful to have a professional soccer league in the Twin Cities which should
result in increased interest in the sport.
3
