515 Little Canada Road, Little Canada, MN 55117-1600
(651) 766-4029 / FAX: (651) 766-4048
www.ci.l ittle-canal a.mmus
MEMORANDUM
TO: Mayor Keis & Members of City Council
FROM: Bill Dircks, Public Works Director
DATE: November 5, 2015
RE: Purchase of 2001cW Generator
MAYOR
John Keis
COUNCIL
Rick Montour
Michael McGraw
Tom Fischer
Christian Torkelson
ADMINISTRATOR.
Joel R. Hanson
The new public works facility has been equipped with the ability to connect to generator
power to ensure that operations can continue in the event of a power outage, if there is a
power outage the public works departinent is almost always called in to keep lift stations
running, clean up streets from storm damage, work on flooding issues, or any deal with
number of other disaster scenarios. The public works facility needs to be powered so
that staff can mobilize and work out of the building.
The City currently owns two large generators (200 kW and 100 kW) and two smaller
15,000 watt generators. Those generators are all spoken. for if there is amass power
outage city-wide and there are still critical lift stations and buildings that may need
power. The 200 kW generator is used at the Booster Station to keep water pumping to
the water tower if power is lost. The 200 kW and 100 kW are needed to power City Hall,
the Sleepy Hollow storm water lift station, and four sanitary lift stations. Another large
generator would be a great help in being able to power all of those critical. buildings and
lift stations. The smaller generators can be used at three of the remaining lift stations and
the Sunset Court lift station has a standby generator on site.
An additional generator for the new public works shop can also be used to power City
Hall, or any of the lift stations. The generator is a 200 kW Cummins generator. The
emissions for generators are changing next year and prices are expected to increase quite
a bit. Staff can purchase a generator in 2015 for $77,000 and :Cit it with a plug for an
additional $300045000. Staff also priced out a Ziegler Cat generator and the price was
$75,000 for a 150 kW plus $3000-$5000 for a plug. The Cummins 200 kW model is
about the same price and provides more power, and the dealer is located in White Bear
Lake so service is easier.
Staffreconlmends purchasing a 200 kW Cummins generator from Cummins NPower for
$77,000 plus a plug for $300045000, depending on the length of cord required.
