MINUTi/S
CITY COUNCIL
MAY 14, 2003
the roundup was better spent somewhere else. Fahey indicated that he felt
it was appropriate to spend tax dollars to abate a nuisance.
Day felt there were alternative ways to deal with geese and indicated that
tying ribbons in areas where you do not want the geese is effective. Day
felt that people should be looking for ways to live with the wildlife. ,Fahey
did not think it practical to string ribbons all over the City, noting that the
problem exists at businesses, homes, and in City paii<s. There is currently
an overabundance of geese and the problem will only get worse if control
measures are not taken.
Anderson asked if there was some way to get there without taking drastic
measures.
Day questioned whether there was a significant ina'ease iu the goose
population this year. Blesener suggested that if there had not been an
increase, the City would not be getting complaints. The City
Administrator indicated that once the survey results are received, the City
will know what the counts are.
Day felt there were better places to spend the City's money. Fahey replied
that he felt it was appropriate to spend taxpayer money to eliminate a
nuisance. He noted that it is too late to do egg addling; and given a
roundup was not done last year, the problem has worsened. Fahey felt that
the roundup should occur' and also that Dr. Cooper provide information on
less aggressive ways to control the geese population that can be
considered for subsequent years.
Day indicated that she would like to coordinate a volunteer egg-addling
program. Fahey indicated that the City would welcome that effort,
however, felt that for this year the solution was a roundup. Fahey again
asked chat Dr. Cooper provide information on alternative control
measures.
Mr. Blesener introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption:
RESOI UTION NO. 2003-.i-I (l1- A UTIIORIZING DLt.
