MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
January 2, 2003
Sackett Glaser suggested holding the social on the Wednesday before Canadian Days. Crary
stated that the 3 on 3 basketball tournament may be another possibility. Broten suggested
holding it on a Wednesday night in conjunction with a talent show. The Commission felt this
was a good idea, but would take a lot of coordination.
The Commission favored pursuing the Wednesday night idea as a prelude to Canadian Days
with the high school jazz band to perform.
The Director stated that he will talk to the Canadian Days Committee to make sure there would
be no conflicts with the vendors. This item will be discussed again next month and someone
will be needed to chair the event.
RONDEAU Sackett Glaser asked when advertisements for bids will be going out on the Rondeau Park
PARK improvements. She wanted to make sure that a neighborhood meeting was held prior to the start
of construction. Sanders stated that he was unsure of the exact date, but felt they will be
advertised in January or February with construction to possibly start in April or May. The
Director stated that he would talk to staff to get a more accurate estimate of the time period.
Schabacker asked if one company's playground plans will be presented to the neighbors or
would there be several The Director stated that he thought project specifications were setup i^
such a way as to allow several companies to bid on it.
RAILS Sanders presented another revised trail plan to the Commission. Some of the comments
expressed at the meeting included:
• Add connection at northeast corner of Pioneer Park.
• Retain the Desoto Street connection from the power lines south since this is the most
desirable connection. However, a connection on Vanderbie from the power lines south
could be an alternate used to lessen the impact on the existing farmland in the area. Show
both connections on the plan.
• Edgerton Street connection should be removed since it is so dangerous.
^ Add Maple Leaf Court connection.
^ Remove one of the connections to the Waterworks Trail between Jackson Street and
Country Drive.
Sackett Glaser suggested that Sanders put some new cost estimates together on all the trail
projects along with updating the trail map.
Freeway crossings were added at Demont and at the Waterworks'Il-ail.
DIR.ECTOR'S The Director reported on the following:
REPORT
• Arbor Day celebration scheduled on Friday, April 25. A tree planting ceremony will be held
with children from local schools participating.
• No ReLeaf Program is anticipated in 2003.
