MINUTES <br />Parks & Recreation Commission <br />February 6, 2003 <br />.:E CREAM The Director stated that he has contacted the Canadian Days Committee to ask them about <br />SOCIAL scheduling the ice cream social on the Wednesday or Thursday before Canadian Days. The <br />Director stated that he wants to make sure that the event would not cause a conflict with <br />Canadian Days. He indicated that he has not heard back from the Committee yet. <br />The Director asked for a Commission Member to serve as chair for the event. It was mentioned <br />that Steinert maybe interested in chairing this year's event. The Director stated that he has <br />talked to Little Canada's A&W Root Beer and they are interested in being involved again. <br />RONDEAU The Director stated that request for bids will be going out on this project mid-February and <br />PARK construction should start this summer. Sackett Glaser stated that the park was originally <br />scheduled to be completed over atwo-year period. However, since the park was delayed a year, <br />she wanted to know if the whole park project will be completed this year. The Director stated <br />he thought that the funds from last year were probably carried over to this year in order to <br />complete the project, and that he will verify that information. <br />The Director stated that once the bids are received, we can schedule a neighborhood meeting to <br />discuss the project. Depending on timing, we may have to hold a special meeting to accomplish <br />this. <br />TRAILS Due to the absence of the Parks Consultant, this item was tabled until next month's meeting. <br />JDGET Due to the potential budget cuts that the State may be handing down to the cities, staff has held <br />a couple of meetings to identify items that could possibly be eliminated from the budget. The <br />items related to parks and recreation are as follows: <br />^ Close down one of the skating rinks for the winter. <br />^ Lights off at one of the tennis courts. <br />• Seasonal staff cuts. <br />• Reduce irrigation in certain areas. <br />^ Reduce soccer field repair to just the center section of the field. <br />^ Eliminating Canadian Days fireworks contribution. <br />Sackett Glaser suggested just reducing the hours at the rink instead of shutting it down <br />completely. The Director stated that flip-flopping days at both rinks has also been discussed. <br />He also indicated that staff is looking at ways to increase revenues to help the budget situation. <br />DIRECTOR'S The Director reported on the following: <br />REPORT <br />Summer youth activities registration for t-ball, pop-up, softball, baseball, after school tennis, <br />and floor hockey will be held on February 27 and March 6. <br />Adult Softball registration begins this Monday with the same number of league offerings as <br />last year. <br />THER Schabacker stated that he will not be able to attend April's meeting. The Director stated that <br />this meeting maybe able to be rescheduled depending on the outcome of the Rondeau Park bids. <br />Page2of3 <br />
