"tINUTES
arks & Recreation Commission
Apri13, 2003
DNDEAU The Director stated that the Council approved the Rondeau Park bids and also felt that bids
PARK should be solicited for the playground equipment. Sanders stated that he will prepare the bid
proposals. The Director asked Sanders to include the sand box area talked about at the
neighborhood meeting.
Sanders stated that he would come back to the Commission with a sketch of the sandbox area.
Sackett Glaser felt that he did not need to come back to the Commission, but that he should go
ahead and solicit the bids. The Commission can always see the plans after the bids are received.
TRAILS Sanders passed out updated trails project location maps and cost estimates for the unfinished
areas. Broten asked Sanders to verify the trail lengths on the estimates, comparing them to the
trail lengths on the map. He felt there maybe some discrepancies. The Director asked Sanders
to update this information in time for the meeting with the Council next week.
Sanders stated that the City has applied for a trails connection grant from the Minnesota DNR,
but the budget crisis may make the future of this grant money questionable. We will know by
July if the grant was awarded to Little Canada. This fall, the City will apply for the T-21 grant.
This grant is federally funded.
The Director stated that paving of the parking lot on Demont/Jackson Street, installation of a
path to RAMS used by the parks maintenance staff, and the dirt storage area at Spooner park
were included in the request for bids just approved by the Council and will be completed this
year.
GOALS Sackett Glaser stated that the Commission will be meeting with the Council next week to
discuss goals. She wanted to discuss this issue with the Commission prior to the Council
meeting to make sure they were all on the same page. The members discussed the trail priorities
and decided that no revisions were necessary.
DIRECTOR'S The Director discussed the following issues:
REPORT
^ The Arbor Day Celebration is scheduled at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, Apri125, 2003 at Pioneer
Park. The school children from Little Canada Elementary School and St. John's School will
be participating.
^ The Town Meeting is Saturday, April 12, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. at Little Canada City Center.
The Mayor, Council and staff will be present to talk to citizens and answer questions.
Displays will be featured on fire prevention, recycling, etc. The Commission is welcome to
attend.
• Legislative updates were distributed. Commission members can contact legislators to voice
their opinions.
Adult softball is almost full with 8 teams on Monday nights, 10 on Wednesdays, 12 on
Thursdays, and 9 on Fridays. These amounts are up from last year.
^ Looking for someone to run the concessions at Pioneer Park. Any group or individual is
welcome.
