MINUTES
Parks & Recreation Commission
December 4, 2003
stated that he has enjoyed his 5+ years on the Commission and wished everyone good luck. The
Director commended Schabacker on his service stating that he has been a great asset to the
Commission. The Commission thanked him as well. Gray indicated that he has applied for
another team.
RONDEAU Sanders stated that work has been started on the playground equipment. Completion should
PARK take about a week. The sidewalk, park path, and benches are in. The basketball backboard is
also in, but the hoop has not been installed yet. Final grading will be done in the spring.
Schabacker asked if the contractor will be penalized due to the late completion date. The
Director was unsure.
DIRECTOR'S The Director reported on the following items:
REPORT
• The new winter registration flyer was distributed including registration information on
babysitter safety class, basketball clinic, fastpitch, gymnastics, and skating lessons. There is
also some adult activity information on the back of the flyer. Gray asked if the 55 Alive
Driver Classes are always full. The Director said that they are very popular and Chey fill up
fast. The classes are provided as a service to residents. The city does not generate revenue
on the classes, but does charge enough to cover coffee.
• The Old Fire Hall tables need replacement at a cost of approximately $4,000. Last night at
the LCRA meeting, they offered to fund half of that cost. The city will cover the other half.
The LCRA uses the facility for quite a few things such as their regular meetings, skating
party, and fundraisers.
• The final paperwork was sent in on the DNR grant that was approved. That project will
begin next spring.
• A list of trees that will be for sale by the Friends of the Parks was distributed. Their flyer
should be out soon.
• A few months ago, the Director approached Millenium Charity Plus with a list of several
different ideas of parks items needing funding. As a result of this request, they have given
the city $60,000 towards the replacement of the Spooner Park garage. The existing garage is
not large enough to accommodate parks storage, Canadian Days storage, and LCRA
fundraising needs. Some discussion needs to occur regarding the type and size of building
to pursue.
OTHER Broten stated that he has walked the power line path for about 5-6 years. He noticed that within
the last year, a lot of dog droppings have been found in the vicinity. He recommended that
signs with litter bag dispensers and litter containers be placed at strategic locations prompting
people to clean up after their pets. He has seen these for sale on the Internet for $225 per set.
He felt that the city should try out a couple. Sanders also has information on similar products
that would work and will forward it to the Director.
